Kappelman: Virtual Laboratories for Physical Anthropology, 4/e Note to professor or Thomson Rep: This registration applies to 2008, 2007 and select 2006 titles only. Hello, my name is __________________, your school’s Thomson representative. I thank you and your professor for giving me this time to walk you through the ThomsonNOW registration process. The tips I’m going to outline in the next few minutes will help you access this product (and get the most out of it). ***REP: Please know that this product is not like the other ThomsonNOW products – it is not matched with a textbook. This NOW product consists of LABS – interactive labs – we moved from CD to NOW so that profs could track student progress and assess time spent on labs.

2 This special edition ThomsonNOW lab product is an easy-to-use online resource that provides you with interactive lab exercises ThomsonNOW slides for Kappelman’s Virtual Labs -- First, we will discuss what ThomsonNOW is and how to use it. Then, we will discuss how to you can get registered to use this tool/resource.

Student Advantages: Completing lab assignments helps you to connect/apply the often challenging course content This lab provides you with 24x7 access to visuals such as fossils (so that you can study from your home/dorm) The lab includes video segments, interactive maps, interactive exercises, quizzing, 3-D animations, and additional tools to help you learn about physical anthropology student Advantages: Assessment centered lab Instructor Advantages: Measurement components provide ability to track student progress & outcome – Instructors can see how their students are grasping the concepts and can show the professor if they need to revisit a topic. They can also see how long students are spending on each lab Instructors can assign the pre- and post-tests The Kappelman Virtual Laboratories provide several benefits to profs/students: Provides students with 24x7 access to images such as fossils Hands-on computer component for completing lab assignments at school or at home Encourages Critical thinking and problem-solving Provides professors with a tool to assess student learning and competencies Lab Notebook (see tab) for students to take notes, answer lab questions, and to prof/print out The NOW version allows professors to shuffle labs around (re-order) to better match their course syllabus as well as shuffle content within labs

4 Select your Lab

5 Diagnostic Pre-Test You can begin using ThomsonNOW for Kappelman’s Virtual Labs independently as soon as you log on--no instructor set up is required. ThomsonNOW is easy to use and in three easy steps you’ll be on your way to better test scores. Step 1…The Pre-Test uses diagnostic quiz questions to give you an initial assessment of what you may already know about the concepts presented in the lab

6 Pre-Test Results When you complete a Pre-Test, you are provided with immediate feedback by question, and your overall score. When you review the complete Pre-Test, you will notice the right column lets you know if you got the answer right or wrong, the correct answer is shown within the question.

7 Recommended Areas of Study
You are then provided with ‘Recommended areas of study’ generated by each student’s incorrect responses to diagnostic pre-tests. Identifying exactly the content areas that each student needs to focus on, ThomsonNOW ensures that you spend your study time where their efforts will make the most difference. From your study plans, students can instantly access: specific textbook pages Video clips that reveal real-life situations from the field Map Exercises to help you think critically and apply important concepts Animated figures from the text that bring critical concepts to life through animation and voiceover narration. For student convenience, a complete eBook is integrated into ThomsonNOW

8 Activities & Exercises
Within each lab there are various types of exercises and activities – such as drag and drop, click to get definitions, interactive maps, primates in ‘motion’, fossil images, etc.

9 Video Clips ..including video clips
Video clips help reinforce concepts and show you field examples you will encounter in the field.

10 Post-Test Results After completing your Labs, you can take a Post-Test to see how much your mastery of the material has improved. Again you are provide with the correct answers.

11 Technical Support Should you have any difficulty with ThomsonNOW, you can click on the Help Button

12 Lab Notebook A "Notebook" feature is available in each of the 12 labs so that the student can take notes that can later be printed out or ed to profs. "Questions for Further Thought" are presented within the "Notebook" for each Lab

13 ThomsonNOW Registration Walkthrough
Now we will walk your students through the registration process so they can start using ThomsonNOW today!

14 Go to www.thomsonedu.com/login.
Click "Create My Account“. Your first stop is You will need to click on “Create My Account” to begin the registration process.

15 Click on the “student” button.
On this page please click on the “student” button.

16 Enter your access code. It came with your textbook or you may have purchased it online or at the bookstore. To begin using ThomsonNOW you must enter a unique access code that allows you to create your personal account. You’ll find this access code on the printed card that accompanies your textbook. Or, if you purchase ThomsonNOW online, you’ll receive the access code at that time.

17 Enter your account information
and then click on the “continue” button. On this page, you’ll need to enter some basic information at the Account Information Page. You’ll need to create a password that’s six to fifteen characters in length. It’s a good idea to write the password down for later reference. The program is case sensitive, so take note of whether you’ve used upper or lower case letters. Your address will become your username. (REP: You might want to have an example of this card on hand, so that students will be able to easily find what they’re looking for.)

18 Read through the license agreement and then
click on “I Agree” and then “continue”. Once you’ve entered your information, you’ll reach the End User License Agreement. Be sure to read through the entire statement, and if you agree, click “I Agree” to continue on.

19 "My Dashboard" lists all of your available resources.
Select the ThomsonNOW resources and continue registering.  Here is your Thomsonedu “dashboard.” On this page, you can see all the resources that are available to you for your textbook. From this page, you can click into any of these resources. To continue in your ThomsonNOW registration process, click on the link that appears next to the ThomsonNOW logo.

20 Enter your school name and click “search”.
To continue, you’ll need to search for your school name and your specific campus (i.e. downtown campus or North campus) if necessary. Please enter the name of the school in the box provided. Then, click search. (REP: If the correct terms aren’t immediately obvious, or there are a lot of options, you might want to provide the suggested search terms for the students, in order to help them get the best possible results.)

21 Select your school and then click “continue”.
To confirm your choice, a list of schools will appear on the next screen. Click on the appropriate choice, and hit “continue.” If you don’t get the results you’re looking for, you can click on “search again,” and if you’re still having trouble, you can contact Tech Support. It will take a couple of seconds to process this.

22 Account creation confirmation.
Verify the information and click on “continue”. This will take you to the homepage of ThomsonNOW.

23 If your professor requires a course key, click on “Register for a Course”. If you’re using ThomsonNOW for self-study, click on the course materials tab.

24 Enter your course key given to you by your instructor.
Then click on “Use This Course Key”. If you received a code from your instructor, you received a Course Key, which is the code ThomsonNOW uses to identify the course you are taking. Enter your course key in the box. [IF NEEDED: Note that some classes are organized as sections of a main course. You can only enroll for one section of a course at a time. If you enroll in a second section, you will be unenrolled from the first.]

25 You are now enrolled in your course.
Click on your "Homepage" tab to begin using ThomsonNOW.
