Draw a “rough” map of the schoolyard (front and back yards) Brainstorm: what important landmarks / geography should be on the map to help students find their way around? Example: flagpole, bench, etc. Draw the important items on small pieces of paper. Tape them to the approximate location on your map.

Latitude and Longitude is a type of grid system that divides the earth into a series of grid squares. No matter where you are in the world, your location can be identified by a latitude and longitude coordinate “address”

Each map coordinate number reflects location in degrees, minutes, and seconds. For example, 47° 15’ 25” means “47 degrees, 15 minutes, and 25 seconds.” You can write a coordinate in many different ways to precisely express a location on earth. For example, you can write 47° 15’ 25” as or 47°15.25’.

Lines of latitude run horizontally and provide locations in the north/south directions.

Lines of longitude run vertically and provide locations in the east/west directions. Degrees of longitude vary in size, decreasing as one moves in both directions toward the poles.

You can use a mapping program on your phone like Google Earth or a cell phone app: Android users: Try "C:Geo" at (The Google play store link is there.) Blackberry 10 users: Can also use "C:Geo" at Click on the Download 'APK' link. The .apk file can be installed directly in the BB10 OS. iOS users: Try "FreeGps“for manual coordinate entry.

Take latitude and longitude numbers (as a group) around different points of the schoolyard – at the corners and around the perimeter every ten feet or so. Take GPS readings of your objects in the schoolyard. Record all numbers on the large schoolyard map, and move the objects to the correct location as needed For deeper understanding: convert GPS and map locations from degrees and minutes into decimal degrees. Use grid paper to draw the school to scale.
