fiction (about things, events, and characters that are not true) nonfiction (about things, events, and people that are based on fact) From these two major categories, we can classify even further into categories that tell us something about the form of the work fiction can be divided into poetry, drama, plays, or prose Classified according to layout and style picture books novellas or short novels short stories Classified by content and theme adventure stories, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, horror, romance, realistic fiction, and historical fiction

The Literary Element of Theme is: the central, underlying, and controlling idea or insight of a work of literature. Identifying the Theme in Five Steps 1. Summarize the plot--the exposition, the conflict, the rising action, the climax, the falling action, and the resolution 2. Identify the subject of the work 3. Identify the insight or truth that was learned about the subject How did the protagonist change? What lesson did the protagonist learn from the resolution of the conflict? 4. State how the plot presents the primary insight or truth about the subject 5. What was learned and how it was learned

Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is. Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character There are five different methods of indirect characterization: Speech-- What does the character say? How does the character speak? Thoughts-- What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings? Effect on others toward the character--What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character? Actions-- What does the character do? How does the character behave? Looks --What does the character look like? How does the character dress?

8 What is Point of view? Point of view is the angle of considering things, which shows us the opinion, or feelings of the individuals involved in a situation. The mode of narration that an author employs to let the readers “hear” and “see” what takes place in a story, poem, essay etc. First person point of view involves the use of either of the two pronouns “I” and “we”. “I felt like I was getting drowned with shame and disgrace.” Second person point of view employs the pronoun “you”. “Sometimes you cannot clearly discern between anger and frustration.” Third person point of view uses pronouns like “he”, “she”, “it”, “they” or a name. “Mr. Stewart is a principled man. He acts by the book and never lets you deceive him easily.”

Diction can be defined as style of speaking or writing determined by the choice of words by a speaker or a writer The word has to be right and accurate words should be appropriate to the context in which they are used the choice of words should be easy for the listener or reader to understand choice of words is important to get the message across Individuals vary their diction depending on different contexts and settings. “formal” where formal words are used in formal situations e.g. press conferences, presentations etc. “informal” diction in informal situations like writing or talking to our friends “colloquial” diction uses words common in everyday speech “slang” is the use of words that are impolite or newly coined
