Ancient Greece: Philosophers used introspection (looking within) to examine thoughts/feelings Aristotle: associationism (the connection between new experiences and past ones); first scientific approach to looking at human behavior Middle Ages: Mental problems were thought to be cases of demon possession (witch trials) Industrial Age: Period of more scientific foundations Birth of sociology as a field of study

Structuralism: Founder Wilhelm Wundt Sought to understand experiences by breaking down to objective sensations and subjective experiences (subjective) Functionalism: Founder William James Sought to understand how mental processes functioned in the survival of an organism (objective)
