8 Japanese Language Materials
CiNii will show you the OCLC symbol to use in order to submit a request to Japanese libraries that participate in international lending to the United States and Canada.

9 ALA Requesting …Because Sometimes there are no OCLC suppliers, no matter how well you search
3.2 International Transactions The conduct of international interlibrary loan is regulated by the rules set forth in the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions’ (IFLA) document “International Resource Sharing and Document Delivery: Principles and Guidelines for Procedure (2009).” -RUSA Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States Explanatory Supplement

10 IFLA Best Practice & Guidelines
IFLA Guidelines for Best Practice in Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Recommendation highlights: Use your experience to select supplying libraries according to speed of service and cost Offer IFLA vouchers as payment Accept IFLA vouchers as payment All requests should be handled in one electronic system, preferably with the ability to interoperate with other ILL/DD systems

11 ALA Request Email Template in ILLiad
Information from the ALA and IFLA forms can be formatted into an ILLiad template for management within ILLiad. Remember that English may not be the primary language of your colleagues around the world, so keep the form concise and direct. Include contact information, payment methods, and bibliographic information.

12 Okay, but where do we send it?!
The OCLC Policies Directory and the WorldCat Registery Profile are great places to start.

13 Better Contacts = Better Results
Many libraries have an English version of their catalog, which is very helpful, not only for bibliographic searching, but also for tracking down contact information. By visiting the library’s website and searching for Interlibrary Loan information, you will get a more specific address and more granular information about their policies. … the more you do, the easier it gets!

14 Interlibrary Loan in many languages
For sites that do not have a toggle-to-English option, you can keep your eyes open for the following words to help find an ILL , if there is no general contact readily visible. Danish: Fjernlån = Interlibrary Loan Dutch: lenen uit andere bibliotheken (IBL) = loans to other libraries French: Reproduction des documents = reproducing documents (ILL at BDF) French: Prêt entre bibliothèques (PEB) = Interlibrary Loan German: Fernleihe = Interlibrary Loan Slovenian: Medknjižnična izposoja Spanish: Préstamo Interbibliotecario = Order ILL Swedish: fjärrlån = interlibrary loan

15 IFLA Vouchers can be ordered through OCLC, paid for by IFM.
International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Vouchers IFLA Vouchers can be ordered through OCLC, paid for by IFM. Full vouchers for $12 each Half vouchers for $6 each Send an article request to VOUCH, noting how many of each voucher type you would like to order. Be sure to update your maxcost.

16 CrediT cards are Pretty great too…
Departmental Purchasing Cards can be a game-changer for accessing materials from non-OCLC Supplier libraries around the world. Many institutions are relaxing rules and regulations as more and more financial transactions are managed with credit cards. Checks are rarely accepted internationally. Some institutions accept only bank or wire transfers. These can be more complicated. If you can figure out how to make payments in as many ways as possible, you will have the most doors open to you for international borrowing.

Some libraries are special cases. They have their own ordering processes. BNM - National Library of Spain UWA - University of Western Australia UKM - British Library Document Delivery Services Columbo Libraries in Canada DELMU - Universitätsbibliothek München

20 National Diet Library of JApan
NHN is now accepting interlibrary loan and copy requests through , on a trial basis. Register as a user, then your standard ALA template for easy borrowing. All are permitted to register for copy requests. To borrow loans, you must have a secure reading area, such as a Special Collections reading room.

21 SILIS union catalog of Slovenian libraries
SILIS is OCLC code for the union catalog for Slovenian libraries.  To place an ALA request for a library with the code "SILIS" you must first visit the Cobiss catalog and search the title to find out which institution holds the item.  Once you find the item in Cobiss, search for the Institution.  For instance - a search for "Neolithic and Bronze-Age herders of Pupićina Cave, Croatia" shows this record: From here, we can see that the item is held by "Slovenska akademija znanosti in umetnosti, Ljubljana SAZU".  Once you know the name of the library you can search for contact info in the OCLC Policies Directory and through Google to find a postal address and address. Searching "Slovenska akademija znanosti in umetnosti" under Institution Name in the OCLC Policies Directory shows postal address and website information. HINT for searching for s:  Library translates to "Knjižnica" and "Biblioteka" & interlibrary loan is "Medknjižnična izposoja" in Slovenian, which can be helpful in finding library contact info.

22 Tracking on non-lenders
Keep track of non-OCLC libraries that do not lend or have limited lending policies (such as no A/V or articles only). Custom Holdings path of ALA-no, document in departmental manual, or keep a Google doc or spreadsheet to track libraries that don’t lend through ALA. Keep the list out of courtesy, but don’t be afraid to make an occasional request for assistance, if there are no other lenders. Knowing other libraries’ policies can help you make an informed ask, if you have exhausted all other suppliers – some libraries will make exceptions or they may be able to help you connect with other libraries in their country that can fulfill your request.

23 The golden Rule… Accept requests in a variety of forms.
Have an online tutorial about your requesting process for non-OCLC libraries or be willing to convert requests to your system. Accept a wide variety of payment methods – especially IFLA vouchers. Consider lending for free to developing countries. Keep communication clear and streamlined. Provide electronic versions whenever possible. Be sure to include international lending in your licensing agreements.
