Direct Characterization
Writer states directly what the character is like.

2. Indirect Characterization
Learn about character by what he/she says. Character reveals what he/she is feeling or thinking. Learn by character’s actions

Characters Actors in the story. 6 labels for characters

1. Protagonist The central character of the story.
Involved in the main conflict of the plot. Often changes during the story.

2. Antagonist A force working against the protagonist. Can be another character, society, nature or a force within the main character.

3. Dynamic Characters Characters who change significantly during the story.

4. Static Characters Characters who change little or not at all.

5. Round Character Fully developed Learn of both faults and virtues

Flat Character One – sided; not developed Often stereotypical

Stereotype Emphasizes a groups characteristics
Overlooks the individuals characteristics Categorize because of the group they belong to
