2 Direct Characterization: author tells the reader about the character Examples:  Jane likes to shop.  Bob is patient and kind.

3 Indirect Characterization: author shows the character’s personality to the reader Examples:  Jane’s face lit up with a smile when she entered the mall.  Bob spent last Saturday helping his little brother build a Lego train.

4 ST E A L 5 ways authors can use indirect characterization: S peech What does the character say? How does he or she speak? T houghts What are the character’s thoughts and opinions? E ffect on other characters How does the character make other characters in the story feel? How do they react to him or her? A ctions What does the character do? How does he or she behave? L ooks What does the character look like? How does he or she dress?

5 Types of Characters Round  more than one side of the character’s personality is revealed Flat  only one side of the character’s personality is shown Dynamic  character changes and develops from the start of the story to end Static  character remains the same throughout the story

6 Types of Characters Protagonist = the character that faces the main conflict in the story Antagonist = the character(s) that oppose the protagonist
