1 British Acts (Tax Laws)

2 1775 Quartering Act. The British further angered American Colonists with the Quartering Act, which required the colonies to provide barracks and supplies to British troops.

3 Colonists are now picking up the cost of the British army.
-- The Colonists must provide a place for the troops to live, and if that means the troops are away from military barracks Colonists must let them live with them. - Colonists must pay for the British Regulars’ food, supplies and housing!

4 Why? (British/Loyalist Point of View)
Cutting costs by placing the cost of maintaining an army onto the colonists England is protecting the Colonists and needs help paying for the war debt– so the Colonists should pay for their protection

Response to Quartering Act in NYC There is now an Increased sense of fear… now standing armies in the colonies (Why are there even troops here!_) NYC Merchants refused to pay for supplies to support British troops (, no taxation without representation) NYC harbors refuse to let the British Ships in.

8 Townshend Act: 1767 Placed a tax on imported glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea. Tax money was used to pay for military costs.

More resistance from the colonists Boycotts of British goods Massachusetts sends a protest letter to King George III (stop taxing us!)

10 Results King George III: “I’m the king I can do what I want!”
Sends troops to occupy Boston - Increased activity of Sons of Liberty -1770 – repeal of Townshend Acts…except for tea Growing anger of the colonists against British rule

11 Tea Act: 1773 England lowered the cost of tea, so it could trade with the world, but… They increased the tax. This led to the Boston Tea Party

14 Intolerable Acts:1774 Punished the colonies for the Boston Tea Party.
Closed Boston’s Harbor. Placed Boston under military control.
