13 Map – for FIRST half of the lesson
Constantinople! a Christian city in Christian Byzantine Empire! Major European Crusades GEOGRAPHY QUESTION! Where did the FOURTH Crusade take place? GEOGRAPHY QUESTION! Where did the First, Second, and Third Crusades take place? Jerusalem In MUSLIM LANDS: Anatolia + Syria towards the cities of Acre and Jerusalem

14 Map – for 2nd half of the lesson
Jerusalem India! GEOGRAPHY QUESTION! What is the current country that once was under the Mughal Empire?

15 Why was the mission of the Crusades impossible?
The land that the Muslims and Christians were fighting over actually belonged (historically) to… the JEWS! Yellow highlighted area = The “Promised Land” that God promised Abraham, the patriarch (male head of family/tribe) of the Jews in the Old Testament

16 Why was the mission of the Crusades impossible?
The land that the Muslims and Christians were fighting over is STILL in contention TODAY amongst: Muslims, Christians, Jews , and the international community!! heated disagreement East Jerusalem = Palestinian (Muslims) territory occupied by the country of Jordan West Jerusalem = occupied by Israel (Jews) The city of Jerusalem: a holy city to THREE major world religions! (Islam, Christianity, Judaism)

17 Why was the mission of the Crusades impossible?
The Crusaders never fully “reclaimed” the Holy Land from the Muslims! (which was their goal, btw) Some Crusaders went back home after their victory…and the territory fell back to Muslim control… Lack of geographical knowledge of the land = poor military tactics and strategy! Crusaders weren’t able to establish a POLITICAL stronghold: local people were not loyal to them!

18 What were the effects of the Crusades?
This HAS to be your favorite word by now… Ok, actual ideas/goods were NOT McDonalds, but: mathematical/scientific ideas and goods like silk + spices. Further Breakdown of Feudalism Noble lords who left Europe to fight in the Crusades lost their land and power back home. The power of kings and the Church increased. Increased Spread of Culture, Religion, Ideas, and Goods Trade flourished. Europeans exposed to new knowledge and concepts from the Muslim lands. Muslims exposed to military technology. Fall of the Byzantine Empire Christians in the Fourth Crusade actually took Constantinople in 1204 out of jealousy of the city’s economic wealth. Their attacks severely weakened the empire, which fell to Muslim Turks in 1453.

19 After the Crusades…Muslim lands fell to MONGOLIAN INVASION !!
I’m also known as Genghis Khan! Abbasid Dynasty (Muslims)

20 The Mongols were then pushed out by the Mamelukes… which were free to rule the Middle East until the rise of… the Ottoman Turks! Mamelukes 1250 to 1517 Crusades 1095 to 1270 Safavid Dynasty 1501 to 1736 Ottoman Empire 1299 to 1922 Mongols 1258 to 1260 Mughal Empire 1526 to 1857 300 C.E

21 Lastly, new empires arose in these Muslim lands after the decline of the Mongols.
Mamelukes 1250 to 1517 Crusades 1095 to 1270 Safavid Dynasty 1501 to 1736 Ottoman Empire 1299 to 1922 Mongols 1258 to 1260 Mughal Empire 1526 to 1857 300 C.E
