Magazine Proposal By Anna Preston

Introduction This presentation is to clearly outline my plans and ideas for my very own magazine publication and it’s title, genre, target audience, content, style and why my magazine is unique.

Genre The genre of my magazine is food and the sub-genre which it falls under is gluten-free food. This is a fairly niche genre as there aren’t many other magazines out there like mine as I am targeting a very specific audience compared to other magazines. My magazine will revolve around the topic of gluten-free food as the audience that I am targeting will be coeliacs or will suffer from an intolerance to gluten.

Target audience The audience that I will be targeting my magazine towards will be coeliacs and gluten-intolerant people. I am targeting this audience because I want my magazine to be a source of information and comfort for young people suffering with these food allergies. Psychographics My audience would enjoy cooking and baking as this is a very relevant topic in my magazine. They would also ideally be interested in learning more about the gluten-free lifestyle and advice concerning it. Demographics Aged 16-19 E grade socio-economic class Both male and female I am targeting such a young audience as this hasn’t necessarily been done before, making my magazine niche. Also, because I will be able to target my audience more efficiently because I am also a member of the target audience. I am targeting both genders because my magazine is open for everyone.

Title The title of my magazine is ‘Free-from fantasy’ as my focus group thought that this title suited my younger target audience and that they would find this appealing. My focus group, who were members of my target audience, agreed that they thought this title would directly target a younger audience because of how informal it sounds.

Content I will be creating 2 double page spreads that will be based around the genre of my magazine. After coming up with several ideas and gathering feedback from my focus group, I have narrowed down my ideas to 2 different ideas. An interview with a coeliac, discussing how they were diagnosed, how they adjusted to a gluten-free lifestyle and the struggles they faced along the way. A feature about substituting ingredients to create an entirely different recipe; whilst following the same steps.

Style A lot of food magazines use serif fonts as they are targeting an older audience, which led to me wanting to go for a very basic and simplistic font. Which my focus group also thought would attract a younger audience who were more modern. I will be using a fairly modern looking font as my focus group thought this would be the most appealing to my audience, they also liked how this type of sans serif font was unconventional to the genre. The colour scheme that my magazine will be following is centered around the colour yellow as little to no magazines in this genre use this colour. The images will be kept very basic and simple as this coincides with the general theme of my magazine. The image on the front cover will be fairly straightforward and will be a plate of food neatly arranged as this was appealing to my audience. The images for my main article (with interview) will be kept very simplistic as well, and will feature a picture of my interviewee in a home environment.

Layout The layout for my magazine will be simplistic and modern as I want this to relate to my audience as much as possible. My focus group liked 2 different layout ideas that I had created so my plan is to combine both of their favourites. I will be using the style of masthead in the second layout, and combining it with the first one. I will also be adding a cover line to give my cover some context as my focus group thought this would be a good idea of catching the readers interest.

Unique selling point The unique selling point of my magazine is that I can personally relate to the target audience, thus making it easier for me to target them and provide them with content. Being a member of the target audience and a similar age to them, is an advantage because I know what I would want from a gluten-free magazine, therefore I know what other members of my target audience would want.
