2 John Smith Strong leader who saved the Jamestown colony. Forced the “gentlemen in the wild” to work.

3 Pocahontas Daughter of the Indian chief Powhaten. Saved John Smith from being execution. Married Jamestown leader John Rolfe.

4 John Rolfe Jamestown leader who brought tobacco to the colony. Married Pocahontas.

5 John Carver Pilgrim leader who received a charter for Plymouth colony and organized the voyage of the Mayflower.

6 Samoset First Indian to greet the Pilgrims. Know English and served as a translator.

7 Massasoit Indian chief of the Wampanoag who befriended the Pilgrims

8 Squanto Indian who taught the Pilgrims to fish, hunt and farm using fish for fertilizer.

9 William Bradford Pilgrim leaader. 2nd governor of Plymouth colony. Wrote “A History of Plymouth.”

10 John Winthrop Puritan leader and governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Called the puritan colony “A City Upon A Hill,” meaning a model Christian society.

11 Roger Williams Founder of Rhode Island colony. He was a Puritan minister who left Massachusetts because he believed in freedom of religion.

12 Pequots Indian tribe who battled and the Connecticut puritans. In 1637, 500 Pequots were killed when the victorious Connecticut colonist attacked their fort.

13 Thomas Hooker Puritan minister who left Massachusetts and founded Connecticut. He set of The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, America’s first constitution.

14 Anne Hutchinson Outspoken puritan women who was expelled from Massachusetts for criticizing the government, church, and the status of women in society.

15 William Penn Founder and proprietor of Pennsylvania, Quaker leader and champion of religious toleration. Called Pennsylvania his “Holy Experiment.”

16 James the Duke of York King of England’s brother, who seized New Amsterdam with four British warships, renaming it New York.

17 Cecil Calvert (Lord Baltimore)
Catholic proprietor and founder of Maryland. Gave settlers extra land for children and servants. Toleration Act of 1649 protect all Christians.

18 James Olgethorpe Proprietor of Georgia (named for King George II). Wanted London’s debt prisoners to come to Georgia. Forbad slavery and liquor.
