Wealthy against Muhammad’s message: tried to take their power Wealthy beat/tortured his followers Muhammad left for Yathrib: trip is called hijra: Renamed Yathrib Madinah (city of the prophet) Muhammad enters Yathrib (Madinah)

Madinah accepted Muhammad as God’s prophet and as leader Created an Islamic state: gov’t that uses political power to uphold Islam Makkah (afraid of Muhammad.) gave control of city to Muhammad Makkah became holy city

8 III. Islam’s Teachings Islam, Judaism, Christianity: share some beliefs: Believe in 1 God God spoke through prophets: Abraham, Moses, and Muhammad Muhammad not divine like Jesus is to Christians

9 What Is the Quran? Quran = holy book of Islam
Collected messages to Muhammad from Allah = Quran (God’s written words) Instructs people how to live: similar to Bible Has rules about daily life: -No pork, liquor, gambling, etc… Has rules about: -Marriage, divorce, fam. life, property rights, business Muslims: fulfill 5 Pillars Sunna: customs based on Mu’s words and deeds

10 The 5 Pillars Belief Prayer Charity Fasting Pilgrimage
Muslims must declare that Allah is the one true God and Muhammad is his prophet Pray 5 times a day facing Mecca Muslims must give to the poor Muslims must not eat from dawn to dusk during Ramadan Muslims must try to visit Mecca at least once in their life
