Background Information
NME is a British music magazine It is based on music but has shifted into other forms of entertainment, such as film. NME was founded in 1952 It is one of the most famous music magazines. IT started off as a newspaper but then converted to the magazine format.

Genre NME is a music magazine that also includes articles on other forms of entertainment such as film. They also occasionally include issues about politics, such as the special election edition. It is a music magazine as it mainly focuses on the biggest and latest topics in music. The magazine A4 sized and can be picked up from certain pick up points (tube stations, rail stations, retail stores, music venues etc.) It is a free magazine available every Friday and is based on music, film and style.

Target Readership The Primary Audience are music enthusiasts, this is clearly shown as the magazine includes lots of popular music artists such as, Rihanna, Florence, Mark Ronson etc. It is targeted to both males and female, bust mostly males. The target age is and it is aimed at white people, this is because it is a British magazine and 87.1% of British people are white according to the 2011 Census. The people who read NME are people who like music and films. In February 2016 NME reached its peak readership which was 307,217. Reader Profile: Name: Thomas Clyde Age: 19 Occupation: Student, retail Hobbies: listening to music, playing games and sports. Income: £12,000

Article/Feature The article is a one page spread, I can tell this as the page next to it is an advertisement. The article is promoting Frank Ocean’s new album. There is a picture of Frank Ocean looking at the camera and there is an image of a library due date sheet to show how many times his new album has been delayed. I know that the album is called ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ as it includes the title of the album in the article several times. The main headline is Agenda. Agenda is one of the sections in the magazine and it is about what everyone’s talking about according to the subtitle. The headline is written in gold 3D capitals, this shows that this makes it looks luxury as it is about the hottest topic this week. The subtitle is written in white capitals so that you can clearly read it on the black background. The title of the article is written in bold white letters, this makes it legible on the black background. The article uses mostly formal language, this makes it seem more professional and important. There is a section at the bottom called Frank talk. This section is highlighted in red to separate it from the rest of the article. The title is a pun as it means honest talk, but it also means talk about Frank. This is informal. In this section they get 4 people to talk about the album, these people are singer James Blake, rapper Chance the rapper, the producer on the album, Malay and Frank Ocean himself.

Contents NME features mainly music related article/features but includes film and style article/features such as this Suicide Squad edition. They do have a contents page, they separate the magazine in three parts. Features, Sections and Regulars. The three main articles are in the features section, including the cover story. The three sections in are agenda, radar and live. Then you have the regulars such as what’s on your headphones, things we like, under the radar and soundtrack of my life.

Front Cover/Page This issue has two covers as the actual front cover is an advertisement. Masthead/Title – the title is ‘NME’, which stands fro New Musical Express. This is written in a bold white capitals. The white contrasts well with the background image. NME is a well known magazine and people can easily recognise that it’s an NME magazine from the masthead. It is placed in the top left corner and catches the eye well. In the second cover, the masthead is in white capitals, it is positioned at the top of the page in the centre. The slogan is Music, Film, Style. This shows the genre of NME and lets the reader know what type of magazine they are about to read. They also include, at the top of the page, the date of this issue as well as the price (free) and how often they distribute issues (every Friday). Unusually, there are no cover lines, this is unusual for a magazine. They use informal language as they use a pun when they say ‘Alright petal, it’s Blossoms’, this pun is introducing the blossoms, but at the same time with the use of the word blossoms they’re talking about flowers which links tot their name, the Blossoms. Main Image – There is one image on the whole cover, it is a poster for Suicide Squad. This image is also and advertisement and is how NME makes most of it’s revenue as it is a free magazine. I know this is an advertisement as it say ‘advertisement’ in small capitals in the top right corner. The image uses very bright colours and is very colourful. This fits the theme of Suicide Squad and also this attracts people to pick up the magazine as it catches the eye and looks very interesting. The image covers the whole page. In the second cover we see an image of the band called Blossoms. They are surrounded by several petals which relates to their name, Blossoms. They include the name of the film, Suicide Squad, as well as the name of the character in the image, Joker, in capital letter. They also include the slogan, worst heroes ever. The font is very childish and eccentric which fits the theme of the film.

Advertisement There are several advertisements in the magazine as it is a free magazine, and advertisement is where they get most of their revenue. This is because companies will pay NME for advertising space, so that that company can get more sales. Sometimes they call brands and ask if they want to advertise. For example, they had an article about Harley Quinn, one of the main characters from Suicide Squad, so they may have called and asked if they wanted to advertise Suicide Squad in NME, they also advertised Suicide Squad merchandise on three other pages. I am going to be analysing an advertisement on pages 14 & 15. The headline, Suicide Squad, is in purple and in capitals. This makes it clear and the font is in a stencil style so that it fits with the Suicide Squad movie. The Q in Suicide Squad has a cartoony skull face, this shows that the movie is comedic and crazy. There are individual image of the products, there are two types of products, suicide squad t-shirts and toys. All the images are surrounded by pink, as it is an advert for HMV and pink is their primary colour. The deal ‘2 for 20’ is written in large to attract people flicking through, this is a good deal and will attract people and may persuade them to buy other products as well. HMV is writen in the bottom left corner in pink, this tell the reader where they can purchase the products, it is on a black background as pink on black as that is hmv’s logo. On the bottom right logo is hmv’s logo of a dog listening to music. The advertisement fits NME’s target audience of year old males.

House Style The style of the magazine is usually includes the masthead in the top left corner. The magazine uses the same font throughout except for certain sections which may have a special font. The font is legible and simple. The cover usually includes an image of the artist(s), the price, date, cover story and slogan. They tend to stick the house rules throughout, which is a good thing as people can recognise that it’s an NME magazine just by looking at a random page. This makes it look professional and organised. The house style of NME is the title in capitals on the top left corner underneath the price (free), issue date and how often the magazine is released, with the main cover story underneath. They also include one large image of the main musician in the issue and a yellow circle with the slogan ‘music, film, style’. The accent colours are red, yellow and green. They tend to sue a small simple clear font and the text is usually in columns in either black or white. They usually have one large image on each page and the articles/features usually take up a whole page.
