2 Understanding Emotions
We try to repeat situations that will give us “pleasant emotions and not repeat unpleasant emotions”, this is LEARNING. This LEARNING can cause us to change our behaviors. What is Empathy?

3 Expressing Emotions Healthy expressions: talking, body language, creative expressions Healthy expression of emotion is the key. Unhealthy expressions can be harmful and hurtful. (violence) Goal: good communication skills to express yourself- creative expression; drawing, art, good listener as well

4 Coping w/ Emotions Self Esteem- how you value and respect, confidence in yourself High SE can cope with problems as temporary vs Low SE who view situations as hopeless, and are easily overwhelmed. Negative Thinking- pessimist Positive Self Talk- optimist

Defense Mechanisms are automatic behaviors to uncomfortable stress Mature or Immature Responses: by recognizing the problem or by attempting to ignore it

Causes: Inherited, environment “is a disorder that affects a persons thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.” Disorders are grouped by the kind of behavior or emotional change they cause.

Bi Polar Mood Disorder: uncontrollable mood changes
BMD or “Manic Depression” is bouts of happiness followed by periods of depression Mania= happy, energetic, irritating, need little sleep Depression= sleep or eat + or - normal BMD may have experiences and beliefs that are not real Hallucination-sensing things that are not real Delusions- false belief ie. Famous person Symptoms of BMD are common in several MI therefore its difficult to recognize and treat. But once treated the benefits are great!

Schizophrenia- break from reality
People usually have hallucination, delusions plus paranoia “belief others are trying to harm them”. Symptoms: unorganized thinking, nonsense speech

Depression- extreme sad and hopelessness for 2+ weeks
Sad for no reason Inability to cheer up Lack of energy Tired Change in eating and sleeping Thoughts of suicide

Depression- treatable
X # of people have depression in U.S. 40% of X are= diagnosed DP 50% of DP receive treatment=RT 80% of RT= OK Suicidal thinking is the thought of taking one’s own life HELP…. -Tell and adult, get help immediately thru the hospital ER or Police

Counselors – talk thru problems Social Workers- deal w/ problem using friends, family assistance Psychologist- tries to change thoughts, feelings by new ways of handling emotions Psychiatrist- MD who studies brain illness, function and emotions may choose to use medications or counseling
