1 Class Starter What were the three main immigrant groups that came to the US in the early 1800s? Which group faced the most discrimination at the time? What were reasons that people immigrated to the United States?

3 Cities in the United States
Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore were the largest US cities in 1790. Crucial trade hubs in the US. During the Industrial Revolution, more cities grew and provided economic opportunities to immigrants and others who left their farms. However, the cities also offered the dangers of poverty, damaging fires, and unsanitary conditions which led to diseases. Rivals interests led to growing conflicts in the cities.

5 Growth of Cities Erie Canal: Connected NY with Great Lakes Region.
Canals decreased travel time for goods and people. Factories attracted large numbers of people. Innovations in transportation (national road, Steamboat, Canals, railroads) made it easier to transfer goods. As Industrialization grew, the cities grew.

6 City Services Crime, vice, and the threat of “disorder” (Merchants wanted a stable environment to conduct business) led to the first police force in Boston in Many cities had devastating fires and realized that a fire department was needed. Between cities began establishing government sponsored Fire Departments. Philadelphia: first volunteer fire department mid 1700s and was one of the safest cities in the US to live. It would be the late 1800s before cities began dealing with the Sanitation issue.

Draw a tombstone for the Know-Nothing Party. You must include the name of the Party. The dates of the party’s “life” A picture that represents the party (on the tombstone). And a quote from the Party or a statement about the party. Poster must be colorful.
