Welcome to English 11! Ms. Posta English 11 Teacher Room

2 Course Description The purpose of English 11 is to provide students the opportunity to learn essential college and career readiness skills in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening and language. These skills include academic skills that are necessary for success on the ACT. The curriculum and content of the course is aligned with The Common Core Standards ( and The Cincinnati Public Schools Curriculum Map ( for English Language Arts. Students will be expected to read a variety of challenging grade level texts as well as write for various purposes using appropriate conventions and style. In addition, students will also complete self- selected research projects and present information using effective communication techniques.

5 Technology Each student enrolled in English 11 is required to have an address and a wikispace. If students already have one or both, they do not need to create a new one. Ms. Posta will review both of these requirements in class. Every high school student will have access to Student Blackboard. Students will receive user names and passwords from their mentor bell teachers. Students will be expected to log into blackboard on a daily basis in order to acquire information regarding class content and assignments. Blackboard will also be used to participate in required class discussions/blogs, submit assignments, and take class assessments.

8 Ms. Posta’s Expectations
Arrive to class prepared and on time Respect the instructional process Follow the procedures outlined in the class for daily activities Complete all classwork and homework assignments to the best of your ability Use appropriate and respectful language Accept responsibility for behavior and grades Follow all school rules in the classroom and hallway

9 Classroom Rules and Consequences
No eating, drinking, or gum chewing. (H20 in an exception) No profanity or inappropriate conversation. Do not use electronic devices in class.* Do not enter classroom with coats or hats. Do not be late. *There are exceptions to this which will be explained in class. 10 Important Policies →Late Work: Late work will only be accepted if a student has an excused absence. In order for an absence to be excused, a parent/guardian must write a note or notify Ms. Posta via phone or . In order to make up assignments, student must attend at least ONE help session. →Supplies: Students must have supplies in order to enter the classroom. Students without supplies will be sent back to their lockers and a tardy will be issued. →Help Session, Wednesday 3:40 – 4:30: Students who are in need of making up work because of excused absences or who need of extra help can attend after school help sessions. In order to be admitted to help session, students must be on task in class and arrive to Ms. Posta’s classroom by 3:40.

11 Important Policies →Tardy Policy: Students who are tardy to class will be issued afterschool detentions. Chronic tardiness will result in ISS. →Student Assignment Books: Students are expected to use an assignment book in order to record deadlines and due dates of projects and homework. SABs will also be used to monitor hall passes issued during class. →Hall Passes: Hall passes will not be issued the first ten minutes and the last ten minutes of each bell or during 1st of 5th bell. Students are limited to two hall passes a week.
