The term “sports medicine” covers many different medical disciplines. What fields do you think fall under the sports medicine umbrella? What is meant by the term educational competencies? What other careers are available in the field of sports medicine?

7 EDUCATIONAL COMPETENCIES
Is the basic knowledge an athletic trainer should have of certain subjects: human anatomy human physiology athletic training evaluation exercise physiology biomechanics psychology nutrition pharmacology physics organization and administration

8 ROLES OF THE ATHLETIC TRAINER
Athletic trainers’ roles can be divided into six performance domains:

9 1 – PREVENTION OF ATHLETIC INJURIES
What can ATs do prevent injuries? Ensure safe playing environment Fields/gyms Weather Develop training and conditioning programs Select and fit protective equipment Explain importance of nutrition

10 2– INJURY RECOGNITION, EVALUATION AND DOMAIN 3 - IMMEDIATE CARE
Need to be able to recognize how severe an injury is quickly Understand injuries and illnesses Refer to medical care and other members of sports med team Pre-participation physical exams First aid and CPR certification

11 4 – TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION
Design and supervise rehabilitation programs Use therapeutic modalities Help athletes cope with injuries

12 5 – ORGANIZATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Maintain records for each athlete Physical exams Injury reports Rehab/treatment logs Policies and procedures Supervise personnel

15 WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO TO BECOME A CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINER (ATC)?
4 year bachelors degree in athletic training at an accredited institution (CHANGING!) 800 hours (2 years) of clinical experience First Aid and CPR certification Pass an examination based on the domains Maintain Continuing Education Units

16 AT YOUR TABLE, ANSWER… Think about what you know about athletic trainers. What is the key difference between a certified athletic trainer and a personal trainer? What are other differences in their job responsibilities? (Because they are not the same career path)
