Nuclear Family Mother Father Children Live together in one household

Single-Parent Family One parent Often times the result of divorce
Adoption, parent never marries, one parent dies Mothers head about 90 percent of single-parent families Caring for children and finances are the main worries of single parents

Extended Family A network of close relatives living together or near each other. Aunts, uncles, cousins, or grandparents Children may be raised by grandparents, etc. Provide a strong support system for family members. This type of family can help single parents

Blended Family When single parents re-marry.
Consists of a biological parent, a stepparent, and the children of one or both parents Today 7 million children under the age of 18 live in blended families Problems: Children may feel like stepparent is an intruder Trouble forming new relationships with stepbrothers and stepsisters Successful blended families say that adjustment to this type of family takes time and patience

Foster Family A family in which an adult or couple provides care and a temporary home for children whose biological parents are unable to care for them. Usually made up by government agencies. Some children remain in foster families for an extended period of time. Sometimes foster parents are able to adopt the children.
