1 Something to Hoot About!
Weekly News from Mrs. Corcoran’s Super 2nd Graders 1/30/17 Learning Highlights from Last Week: Math: Students began Chapter 4 – Bar Models. Bar Models can be used as a visual strategy to help solve addition and subtraction word problems. Fundations: Students began Unit 6. They learned how to tap to read and spell vowel-consonant-e syllables. They also learned how to mark up these syllables. Science: Students continued their Winter weather observations by predicting and recording the actual temperature, recording sunrise/sunset times and looking at patterns. Writing Workshop: Students worked on improving and revising their information writing pieces by using a checklist. They also used an editing checklist to work on making their writing more readable. Reading Workshop: In the final bend of our nonfiction writing unit, students will be working with multiple texts on a similar topic. Students examined how their books seemed to go together. For example, the table of contents may show some chapters about the same information, similar keywords or photographs, etc. Upcoming Dates: Homework log due – Friday, February 3rd. Return weekly book baggie – Friday, February 3rd *returning this each week is part of your child’s report card grade for homework Return Library Books – Thursday, February 2nd Mrs. Corcoran’s Birthday – Monday, January 30th Special Schedule: Monday- iPads and Art (Day 4) Tuesday- Music (Day 5) Wednesday- Phys. Ed. (Day 6) Thursday- Library and Art (Day 1) Friday- Music (Day 2) – Fabulously Funny Friday News and Announcements: Students really enjoyed the Movie Party. We watched The Secret Life of Pets. We also had 13 students participate in Career Day! I posted pictures on Bloomz. Students looked adorable. I posted a message on Bloomz that we will be changing our classroom arrangement. With this new change, students won’t have a supply bucket to share. Therefore, I need all students to send in a small, hard cover supply box (Spacemaker boxes work great) to keep supplies. I think I have enough supplies from the beginning of the year to fill them. The only additional item students will definitely need is a pair of scissors. If you want to send in new pencils, a big pink eraser, a box of markers, or any other supplies that had been community supplies, you are welcome to but are not required. These supplies will only be used by your child, not shared among the class, so you can write your child’s name on them. Please send the required supplies by Friday (feel free to send earlier if you have them). Thanks for your help and support!
