Family Religious groups Educational groups Ethnic Groups Government – people form governments to provide for their common needs

11 Government Early governments were simple. A chief or council of elders made important decisions. Leaders based decisions on the culture’s beliefs and customs. As societies expanded, more complex forms of government developed.

12 Types of Governments Democracy – in a democracy, the people have supreme power. The government can act only by and with their consent. Republic – In a form of democracy called a republic, the people choose the leaders who represent them. The United States is an example of a democracy with a republican form of Government Dictatorship – In a dictatorship, a ruler or group holds power by force. Dictators usually rely on military support to stay in power.

Interview activity: In this lesson you will examine several elements of culture by interviewing a fellow student. After completing the interview you will answer 3 comparison questions What do you have in common with the person you interviewed? How is your personal culture different? Why do people often have trouble understanding one another’s culture?
