1 CH 8 Section 3. The Constitution

2 The Constitutional Convention was held at Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

3 John Adams Was ambassador to England during the Constitutional Convention. (Also first VP).

4 Thomas Jefferson Missed the Constitutional Convention because he was ambassador to France.

5 Virginia was the state with the largest population right after the Revolutionary war.

6 Sovereignty means “supreme power”.

7 Roger Sherman Proposed the Great Compromise, which gave us our current model for Congress.

8 The 3/5ths Compromise had to do with whether slaves could be counted in a state’s population determining representation in Congress.

9 George Mason Along with John Dickinson, he wanted to ban the slave trade.

10 Federalism refers to the distribution of power between the national government and the state governments.

11 The Legislative Branch is the branch of government that makes the laws.

12 The Executive Branch is the branch of government that enforces the laws.

13 The Judicial Branch is the branch of government that interprets the laws.

14 Checks and Balances This is a system to prevent any one branch of the government from becoming too powerful.

15 Providing education is the power and responsibility of the state governments.

16 Ratification means “formal approval”.
