3 Poetry What do you think poetry means? Defined (noun) – A metrical writing which is written in an arrangement of words/verse most often rhythmically. "Poetry to me is an outlet. It is the only way I can express my inner most thoughts and feelings and still be able to feel good and smile." - Jody Kuperavage

4 Poetry uses…Figures of Speech
Imagery – to evoke a mental image Irony - ….which is what? the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect Metaphor – comparing two unlike things without using “like” or “as”. Personification- giving an inanimate objects human characteristics. Repetition – a repeating sound, line, syllable Simile- comparing two unlike things using “like” or “as”

5 Mechanics used in Poetry
Rhyme- a recurrence of similar ending sounds Ex: Cat and Bat Luck and Stuck Rhythm- The sound and feel created by the pattern of accented and unaccented syllables, usually repeated, in a poem. Ex: Jack and Jill went up the hill. Syllables are a big part of Poetry. What is a syllable? It is defined as any one of the parts into which a words is naturally divided when it is pronounced. Rhyme Scheme is a big part of poems. What is your definition of Rhyme Scheme? Just like patterns on clothes some poems have a pattern that is repeated. Defined: The ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of the lines of a poem or verse. EX: Roses are red. Violets are blue. Sugar is sweet. And so are you. Rhyme Scheme: ABCB Just know if you go to the next stanza you keep the pattern going. Don’t start back at A unless it rhymes with A.

7 Poetry Remember Poetry is used to evoke emotions.
It can be sad, funny, romantic, or even just about an idea you came across. Have fun with these! There is more to come…
