1 Information Pack hpv.ie #ProtectOurFuture

2 The HSE has begun a new information campaign supporting parents to make an informed decision about the HPV Vaccine. The HPV vaccine protects girls from developing cervical cancer. We hope to have your support in sharing the facts - the HPV vaccine saves lives, and protects our daughters’ future Background Each year in Ireland around 300 women will develop cervical cancer, and 90 of those women will die from the illness. HPV vaccine makes many of these deaths preventable. We know the vaccine works and we know it works very well. In Australia, one of the first countries to introduce HPV vaccine, there has been a 50% drop in rates of pre-cancer of the cervix over the last ten years. In the last couple of years unsubstantiated, scientifically incorrect and dangerous comments have been shared that the HPV vaccine causes harm to girls. These claims are untrue and are not backed by any credible scientific body. Over 200 million doses of Gardasil have been administered around the world and no serious side effect in any country anywhere can be linked to the vaccine. The vaccine is endorsed by major medical and scientific bodies worldwide including the World Health Organization (WHO). In Ireland the vaccine is backed the HSE, the National Immunisation Advisory Committee, the Irish Cancer Society, the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP), the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) and a wide range of organisations who are part of the HPV Vaccine Alliance. Unfortunately, but understandably, some parents are now hesitant to get their daughters vaccinated having heard these fraudulent claims. That is why the HSE have created our campaign, launching on Wednesday August 30th. We want to rebuild confidence in this life-saving vaccine. We want parents to get information about this vaccine from the most reputable source of health information – our hpv.ie website. We want people to know the impact of cervical cancer on the lives of those affected. We want parents to make an informed choice about their daughter’s health and future.

3 Who is the primary target audience?
Parents of girls in First Year of Post-Primary Schools are the most important audience. We also want to address girls who are due to get the vaccine, and health professionals, to aid them in talking to parents who are looking for additional information. How can you help? We are asking for your continued support, to talk about the vaccine, point people with questions to our hpv.ie website, to share and comment on our videos and social media posts, and to challenge day-to-day misinformation about HPV vaccine. There are three ways you can support us: Messaging – It is vital for the success of this vaccination programme to continue to share consistent messages, and our campaign team have created a range of videos, images and social media posts that encapsulate some key points: The HPV Vaccine protects girls from cervical cancer The HPV Vaccine saves lives The HPV Vaccine is safe The HPV vaccine protects her future Get the information you need on hpv.ie, from the HSE.
