1 SWENext Presented by Mary Perkinson BOD3 Update March 20, 2015

2 What is SWE Next? SWENext is a way to become part of the Society of Women Engineers as a student up to the age of 18. Become part of SWE and #BeThatEngineer! Joining is free. Who can be a SWENexter? Any girl 13 or older may join SWENext. For those younger than 13, a parent will need to be the primary contact. We also encourage parents to join regardless of the age of their daughter.

3 SWENext Launch Worked with Membership and Marketing to manage our SWENext list in Daxco SWENext is live! 4 SWENext Launch SWENext announcement sent to SWE Members on March 15 th Press release and social media campaign launched SWE partners were notified that SWENext had been launched Invent It Build It participants were the first 494 SWENexters On March 11 th approximately 75 girls were signed up through the website before SWENext was advertised As of March 19th 225 SWENexters had joined through the website and 60 have taken the feedback survey

6 Benefits for SWENexters, Families & Educators When SWENexters join they will see a welcome pop-up window and will receive a welcome e-mail within a week.

7 Benefits for SWENexters, Families & Educators Up-to-date information about outreach events (camps, competitions, etc.) hosted by SWE and its partners. A catalog of available scholarships for engineering schools offered by SWE and partner organizations. Best practices on applying for scholarships and internships. Eligible to participate in a quarterly webinars, where engineers from various disciplines discuss the work that they do.

8 Benefits for SWENexters, Families & Educators Resources for families and educators that can help effectively promote a career in engineering to your daughter and or female engineering students. A SWENext council where girls can influence the direction of this program...and much more.

9 At Home Activities Have at-home activities available for SWENexters. These will be at home science/engineering activities for the students to do at home with everyday materials. There will be a hashtag created for them to post their projects on social networking. Potentially feature projects in SWE social networks. (We will be doing these bi-weekly to start with a move to do them weekly if this is successful).

10 Week 1 Engineering Challenge We would love to see what you come up with, when you complete your challenge post a photo or video of your project on facebook, Instagram, or twitter with #SWEtheFuture #SWENext #BeThatEngineer #TouchDown #DesignSquad. PBS Design Squad Activity Challenge: Design and build a shock-absorbing system that will protect two “astronauts” when they land using the materials in the materials list.

11 What is next? Create and record two presentations, one for SWE members and one for potential SWENexters Create council of SWENexters to help mold and develop SWENext A digital badge based curriculum to help girls navigate toward a career in engineering while maintaining a digital portfolio of their work. A quarterly (at a minimum) webinar series where engineers can present to girls via webinar and girls can present to engineers Develop a regularly updated blog/STEM news site
