Overview:
The strong central governments and thriving economies of industrialized nations gave them the confidence to expand through imperialism.
Several important factors lead to the new imperialism…

2. Economic Motives Imperialists needed:
Raw materials to supply their factories
Foreign markets for selling their manufactured products
Capitalists/Entrepreneurs needed places to invest profits
Colonies could supply all these things!

3. Nationalistic Motives
A spirit of nationalism was one cause of the new imperialism. Nationalism tends to promote the idea of national superiority. Imperialists believed they had the right to take control of countries they viewed as weaker. Imperialists sought to gain wealth, power, and prestige. They also wanted to halt the expansion of other industrialized nations.

4. Missionary Motives
Some imperialists felt it was their duty to educate people in nations they considered less developed. Believing they were superior, they sought to spread their ideas and customs.
Religion: spread Christianity
Social: spread Western culture

5. Military motives
Military goals were linked to nationalism as military power was a way to promote a nation’s goals.
Politics and the Military:
Military buildup needed to demonstrate power and provide security for global empire
Bases needed to refuel ships
