iDisorder: Understanding Our Obsession With Technology And Overcoming Its Hold On Us By Dr. Larry Rosen Published March 27, 2012

2 Overview This book discusses multiple “iDisorders” that stem from overuse of media and technology Many present with symptoms of actual psychological disorders, like OCD and anxiety Each chapter describes a different disorder in detail, complete with a list of symptoms and ways to cure yourself of them

3 OCD & Anxiety FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) – one doesn’t put down their phone in fear of missing out on something phantom vibration syndrome – where one feels vibrations, such as those that come from a cell phone, that never occurred

4 Anonymity This is an issue because fewer people are developing the necessary skills needed to effectively communicate with people in the real world. Sites like Reddit – allow people to speak their mind under a fake name Results in less subtle social interactions, like small talk – more often than not someone will just look down at their phone to avoid making small talk with someone they don’t prefer to talk to.

5 Eating Disorders Social media alters the way a person views themselves and what mental and physical illnesses can come from that “body dysmorphic syndrome” – constantly thinking about real or perceived flaws for hours each day - Their thoughts may cause severe emotional distress and interfere with their daily functioning.

6 All of these topics apply to our class because they all deal with how technology affects the human body. Every iDisorder that Dr. Rosen discusses throughout this book come back to a single viewpoint: we live in a society that is obsessed with technology.

7 Overall, I would recommend this book to others
Overall, I would recommend this book to others. It really opened my eyes as to how technology is really affecting us and the damage it can cause. You learn that the only way to avoid these iDisorders is to get away from technology for a little while.
