Our IPC Topic for the second term in Spring 2017 is ‘Space Explorers’ Y5 will be exploring and learning about what the views that people in the past held about the Earth, Sun and Moon? They will study famous scientists like Galileo and appreciate his findings about the Earth, Sun and Moon. The children will focus on the constellations and the stories that they tell and how to make a timeline to show some of the important events in the history of astronomy and space. Our Educational Visit: This term we will be visiting The Krishna Radha Temple in Soho and The Science Museum in South Kensington. Exciting! Year 5 SPRING 2 (2017) Topic: Space Explorers Homework: We hand out homework on…. Friday and expect it back on the following Wednesday. Our value this term is: Integrity Physical Education (PE) and Yoga: We have PE on Monday and Wednesday Please make sure your child has the correct PE kit as shown our our school website and that all kit is clearly labeled.

English: Science: NC: Earth and Space This term the children will describe the movement of the Earth, and other planets, relative to the Sun in the solar system. They will describe the movement of the Moon relative to the Earth describe the Sun, Earth and Moon as approximately spherical bodies use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky. Computing: The children will be able to give instructions to an on-screen robot. They will explore how to create a flow chart to show a sequence of operations, how to write a program to control a sequence of lights and motors and how we use a computer to sense light, temperature and sound. The book for this term is the popular Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters. An African Tale. ... This Caldecott Medal-winning African tale evokes the Cinderella story, as well as the traditional theme of good triumphing over evil. We will be learning and consolidating Narratives (stories from other cultures) and learning how to write a Persuasion and Explanatory Text. We will also be studying some Narrative Poetry through The Highwayman. This book will enable them to extend their knowledge of: play-scripts and drama. Philosophy, Religious and Ethics (PRE) and Sanskrit: Maths For Maths we will be expanding on : Addition and Subtraction (column Method) Multiplication, division, fractions (including decimals and fractions) Measurement Spanish: Learn some animals from rainforest, talk about the weather and seasons; verbs: can/ can’t (run, fly, jump and swing); describe some animals. Maths: Good company, personal choice and holy people Pupils will learn about the Hindu emphasis on keeping good company and the development of Sanga. They will learn how the principles of Bhakti yoga and teachings of Chaitanya, emphasise a self-disciplined approach to life, with connection with good spiritual company as a way to develop a sense of community and belonging. History This term the children will begin to appreciate the geographical features of Mars and how we can prove that there was once water on Mars. They will recognize that the study of history is concerned with the past in relation to the present, understand about the ideas, beliefs, attitudes and experiences of people in the past as well as be able to describe and identify reasons of historical events, situations, and changes in the periods they have studied. PSHE: Year 5 will be exploring the SEAL unit ‘Good to be me’ the first of two focusing specifically on feelings. It explores feelings in the context of the child as an individual, developing self-awareness and helping the child to realise that it really is ‘Good to be me'. The theme is about understanding our feelings as well as considering our strengths and weaknesses as learners. It aims to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in three key social and emotional aspects of learning: self-awareness, managing feelings and empathy.  Art & Music: This term we will appreciate and understand improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the inter-related dimensions of music D&T The children will learn about about the technology that is being used to explore Mars And how to design and make our own vehicle to explore a planet’s surface Computing:
