2 Architecture: Careers
Architects: design and supervise the construction of the buildings, while contractors actually perform the activities of physical construction. Contractors Groups of people which are hired to do specific tasks toward the completion of the home, such as general construction, electrical, plumbing, roofing, and masonry.

3 Architectural Drawings
Plans Used to communicate ideas & designs of architect to contractors. Because it is not possible to include all construction details on a single sheet, a typical set of house plans will include a plot plan, floor plan, elevations, wall sections, and foundation/basement plans. Scale These plans are generally drawn to a one-forth inch scale (1/4” = 1’). This means that 1/4 inch on the drawing equals (represents) 1 foot on the building being constructed.

Floor Plans: The size and shape of the building, as well as, location and size of interior rooms, partitions, doors, windows, stairs, & utilities.

Plot Plan: Shows the location of the structure on the building site (plot), as well as, driveways, walks, and patios. Map contour lines and dimensions are sometimes shown.

Elevations: Show the front, rear, & side of the house. They are made up of lines that are visible when the building is viewed from various positions.

Considerations When Planning a Home 1. Money available for building purposes. 2. Geographic Location. 3. Building Codes 4. Basic activities (needs) associated with the home 5. Non-Basic actives (wants) associated with the home. 6. Traffic Flow. 7. Noise!!! 8. Topography in the surrounding area of the home. 9. Landscaping possibilities

Generate a list of the types of activities that are going to occur in the home. Basic Non-Basic Misc. Sleeping Sewing Stairs Bathing Swimming Closets Relaxing Shop Hallways Eating Office Balconies Gun range Patios Home Theatre Generally the list of wants are larger than the list of needs. That’s when you will have decide which of the wants you can afford to keep and which one will rejected.

9 Architecture: Steps in Designing a Home
Create several Bubble Flow diagrams to designate approximate size and location of rooms and hallways in relation to each other, as well as, showing traffic flow. The bigger the bubble in relation with other bubbles, bigger the room.

Select the best possible room allocation scheme and begin Rough Drawings of the floor plan, modifying as necessary until final room placement is chosen.

Draw interior and exterior walls, as well as, designating the location and type of all the doors and windows in the home

STEP 5: Estimate construction price by calculating price per/foot of wall feet, foundation, roofing, as well as, prices on doors, windows, property, utilities, and permits.

GOAL 1. You are to form an architectural firm who’s purpose is to design a home for a family including landscaping. 2. You are to build a model representation representing the home that you designed. 3. You will present your ideas to your clients via a presentation.

LIMITATIONS 1. Scale of the bubble/flow diagrams (scale 1/4” = 2’). 2. Scale of the floor & plot plans (scale 1/4” = 1’) 3. No violent or non-tasteful activities 4. Must contain basic/non-basic/miscellaneous activities. 5. Must be under $130,000 + $5000

General Code Must have at least 1 storage closet and 1 coat closet. Must have at least 2-3 bedrooms Must have 1 window for every 150 sq../ft Bedrooms and bathrooms must have doors. Must have 1/2 bathrooms /per bedroom. Must have a front and rear exit (fire code). Bedrooms Must have a least 1 closet per bedroom Closets Min 4ft x3 ft
