6 Dual Language Program Description
Lamar’s dual language (DL) program allows DL students from elementary school and native Spanish speakers the opportunity to continue to develop bi-lingualism, bi-literacy and bi-culturalism through three years of Science and Spanish for Spanish Speakers (SSS) courses. Our DL science courses are Pre-AP and taught using a 90% Spanish – 10% English Bridge model and our SSS courses offer a high school credit for Level I, another credit for Level II and a weighted credit for Level III. SSS courses are taught only in Spanish. Dual Language Program Description Go Scotties!

7 Dual Language Transfers
Students from DL elementary schools and native or fluent Spanish speakers may apply for Lamar’s DL lottery. Qualified students may receive a transfer for DL to Lamar. Selected students must successfully complete the DL Science and DL Spanish courses each year to maintain the transfer. Withdrawal from the DL program revokes the transfer. Dual Language Transfers Go Scotties!

8 This will be our 5th year as AISD’s middle school fine arts academy
Lamar’s Fine Arts Academy is aligned with McCallum’s FAA Go Scotties!

9 Fine Arts Academy Accelerated Curriculum Design
School-wide Engagement All programs, including FAA strands, are open to all students. This provides creative learning opportunities for all students and results in higher academic achievement at all levels. It also creates a school-wide culture of arts engagement that attracts high levels of parent and community engagement. Positive Peer Pressure By design, 35% of the total student population are FAA students, 50% participate fully in FAA majors but are not designated as FAA students, 98% satisfy at least twice the required fine arts requirement and 2% satisfy the minimum fine arts requirement. In addition, all teachers and aides are trained three times a year in Creative Learning strategies. This creates a rich learning environment in every classroom which pulls reluctant and struggling learners towards engaged learning. Fine Arts Academy Accelerated Curriculum Design Go Scotties!

10 Fine Arts Academy Accelerated Curriculum Design
Creative Multipliers Students enroll in one to four fine arts courses per school year. Students who enroll in multiple, complementary fine arts classes develop their artistic and creative abilities at an accelerated rate due to mutually reinforcing creative experiences. Substantial Immersion All fine arts courses are year-long and ability-based. This allows students to accelerate learning among peers of comparable ability. Accelerated learning also creates demand for advanced classes (fine arts and non-fine arts), which Lamar currently provides through its majors. 22 Career & Technical Education
Go Scotties!

23 CTE @ Lamar Project Lead The Way - Engineering Strand
Students may begin strand in 6th grade by taking the foundational units DM & AR, then take the specialization units ME & ST in grade 7 followed by the high school course IED for one full weighted credit in 8th grade. Students that begin in 7th grade may double-up on DM&AR and ME&ST then take IED in grade 8. Lamar Go Scotties!

24 CTE @ Lamar PLTW - Engineering Foundational Units -- Grades 6-8
(yearlong course for a half high school credit) Design & Modeling (DM) Students use Autodesk design software to create a virtual image of their designs and produce a portfolio of their innovative solutions Automation & Robotics (AR) Students use the VEX Robotics platform to design, build, and program real-world objects as they learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation and computer control systems. DM & AR are foundational units that must be taken before specialization units. Lamar

25 CTE @ Lamar PLTW -- Engineering Specialization Units -- Grades 6-8
Prerequisite: DMAR Each course receives a half high school credit Semester 3 or 4 – Magic of Electrons (ME) Through hands-on projects, students explore electricity, the behavior and parts of atoms, and sensing devices. They learn basic circuitry design and the impact of electricity around them. Semester 3 or 4 – Science of Technology (ST) Students apply the concepts of physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology to STEM activities and projects, including making ice cream, cleaning up an oil spill, and discovering the properties of nano-materials. Lamar

26 CTE @ Lamar PLTW -- Engineering Readiness Unit – Grade 8
Prerequisite: either ME or ST or DMAR Yearlong – Introduction to Engineering Design (weighted high school credit) Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work. Lamar

27 CTE @ Lamar Computer Science
Students begin with PLTW App Creators and Innovators and Makers , then PLTW Computer Science Essentials for high school credit. Students continue with Video Game Design I & II and/or Coding I & II. *Video Game Design I and II and Coding I and III are not PLTW courses. Lamar

28 Computer Science App Creators – Fall Semester
Grades 6, 7, 8 Students develop mobile apps as solutions to authentic problems that they have analyzed Lamar PLTW – Computer Science

29 Computer Science Innovators and Makers – Spring Semester
Grades 6, 7, 8 Centers on physical computing projects that bring programming out of the virtual environment and into the physical world. Throughout the unit, students will design and develop programmed devices along with the code that brings them to life. Lamar PLTW – Computer Science

30 CTE @ Lamar Computer Science
Computer Science Essentials (CSE) Grades 7, 8 (yearlong course for a high school credit) The second computer science course for students who have never programmed before. Students work in teams to create simple apps for mobile devices using MIT App Inventor. Students explore the impact of computing in society and the application of computing across career paths and build skills and awareness in digital citizenship and cybersecurity. Students model, simulate, and analyze data about themselves and their interests. They also transfer the understanding of programming gained in App Inventor to learn introductory elements of text-based programming in Python® to create strategy games Lamar Computer Science

31 CTE @ Lamar Computer Science
Video Game Design I Prerequisite: Photography I, Apps and Innovators, CSE, or Graphic Design Students will analyze and assess current technologies while designing and creating a video game using text, pictures and digital video. Grades 7-8 Video Game Design II (Semester-long) (prerequisite: Video Game Design I) Grades 7-8 Students will work independently and in teams on video game design projects while continuing to explore current technologies in game design.
