ART STUDIO PROCEDURES Mrs. Melton

PROCEDURES FOR ENTERING & BEGINNING CLASS Quietly & respectfully enter the room. Gather the materials you need for this class, put away belongings not immediately needed. Be seated before the tardy bell rings. Place projects ready to be turned in face down on the student desk. Read the objective & activity for today and write it in your planner. Complete warm up activity in the art section of your binder or as otherwise directed within time requirements. Table leaders to retrieve art portfolios from the designated area and return to table. Students are not allowed to leave the classroom during the first 10 minutes of class.

PROCEDURES FOR ATTENTION When I need your attention, I will ring the chimes. As soon as you hear the signal, stop what you are doing, and look at me. Be ready for instruction. I will have something to say. Listen carefully and respectfully. Indicate that you understood with a nod before moving on.

PROCEDURES FOR SEEKING ASSISTANCE Remain at your seat or creation station. When working in groups, quietly ask the students in your group for assistance. When working alone, signal our student manager(s) that you need assistance and wait quietly and patiently until they can join you. If you still need assistance, raise your hand and wait quietly and patiently until I can join you. Keep working until assistance arrives. Resume working at your seat or creation station.

PROCEDURES FOR TURNING IN PAPERS/WORK Make sure your name, the appropriate table & period, as well as the date is on your paper. Place papers/paperwork face down on the student desk when you are finished or as otherwise directed. Table leaders will collect art work into the portfolio for your table and place it in the designated area to be graded. Only one collection per period will take place per assignment. Please ensure that your paperwork or art is available for collection so that you may receive appropriate credit.

PROCEDURES FOR LEAVING THE CLASS If I am teaching the whole class please wait for a natural break. If it is a good time for you to leave I will use the designated hand signal for OK, by creating a circle with my index finger and thumb, indicating that you may leave now. If it is not a good time for you to leave I will use the designated hand signal for stop, indicating that you should wait. If you need to leave the class to use the restroom raise your hand and use the designated hand signal of crossing your middle and index fingers. Do not linger outside of the classroom. Return promptly to class before 2 minutes have passed. If you need to leave the class to use the drinking fountain raise your hand and use the designated hand signal of raising just your index finger. Do not linger outside of the classroom. Return promptly to class before 3 seconds have passed. If you will need to leave the class for any other reason please alert me prior to beginning class if possible. Raise your hand and use the designated hand signal of raising just your little finger. Do not linger outside of the classroom. Return promptly to class before the predetermined time has passed. If you need to leave the class unexpectedly for any other reason, write the reason and destination on your planner. Raise your hand and use the designated hand signal of raising just your little finger. At a natural break I will approach you so that I can read the paper. I will indicate a time allotment and you may leave upon my signal. Do not linger outside of the classroom. Return promptly to class before the predetermined time has passed. Quietly & respectfully leave the room. Quietly & respectfully enter the room within the allotted time. Follow all campus hall pass and hallway procedures and expectations. You are allowed 3 passes (of any kind) during each semester. Use them wisely.

PROCEDURES FOR VISITORS When visitors enter the room, let the designated classroom “host” or “hostess” greet them. When the “host” or “hostess” rings the chimes, get ready to listen to and look at the visitor. A smile is great! When the “host” or “hostess” introduces the visitor, say, “Welcome to our class ________________.” Remember visitors are here to watch you learn, so be ready to explain what you are working on. Treat visitors respectfully.

PROCEDURES FOR EMERGENCIES Stop everything. Stand up and head for the door quickly, but without running or pushing. Do not cover your ears. Do not make side trips. The designated classroom manager takes the emergency folder and leads the line outside. The second person in line holds the door for the rest of the class to exit orderly, then becomes the last person in line. The third person in line holds the outside door only for our class, then becomes the last person in line. Wait patiently, calmly, and quietly in line outside until we are allowed to go back to what we were doing.

PROCEDURES FOR MOVING ABOUT THE CLASS Always move about the room calmly and respectfully. You DO need to ask for permission first. When forming groups do not move until all instructions have been given and you are directed to. Take all materials you will need but do not bring anything with you unless directed to. Politely find a place to sit where you can do your best learning. Greet each person in your group. Listen carefully for new information. Participate but do not speak when someone else is speaking. Completed the task doing your personal best. Do not compete with anyone else, only yourself. Make sure each person signs the project. Thank the others in your group. When getting a tissue, you may do so at any time. You do not need to ask for permission. Retrieve one from the closest tissue box. Throw the tissue away immediately Make sure it lands in the trash can. Return to work. When you need a pencil, or need to sharpen one: Ask 2 people at your table to borrow one before asking me. Use your personal pencil sharpener to sharpen your pencils. You may NOT get up to sharpen a pencil Return to work.

PROCEDURES FOR FREE TIME If you finish an assignment, first work on any unfinished assignments for this class or an index card mini masterpiece. When you are finished those, you may choose to do your classroom job, read an art book, write a story about a master artist, illustrate a book, make up art projects that could address community problems, work on a research project, peer-tutor someone who needs your help, or create a song or comic strip about what the class is studying. You may NOT interrupt other artists or otherwise create disorder in the studio.

PROCEDURES FOR ENDING CLASS The bell does not dismiss the class. I dismiss the class. Remain in your seat until I dismiss you. Place papers due at the end of class face down on the student desk. Place art work in progress or due in your portfolio for the table leader to return to the designated spot. Review your planner and ensure that you have noted the objective & activity. Review schedule and make notes on assignments and materials that you will need to bring to the next class period. Make sure that you have noted this in your planner. Clean your work station and all materials/tools used. Return your materials/tools to its home base and place your “works in progress” in the designated space. If you were working away from your desk, return when signaled. Return your belongings to your bag, clean your desk and the 3 foot area surround. Sit and wait patiently and quietly for my dismissal. Quietly & respectfully leave the room upon dismissal. Do NOT run! Students are not allowed to leave the classroom during the last 10 minutes of class.
