1 English I: Supplies and Expectations  Freshman! Welcome to Westmoore High School and Welcome to Vogel’s English I Course  The following information will help you be successful in your first high school English class.  Staying prepared updated and organized is key.  Please feel free to take notes over this or use your phone to take a picture. This will also be posted on the class website under “English I Syllabus and Handouts”

2 Supplies: Please have by Monday  Spiral notebook or extra section in binder (see below)  Kleenex  Agenda  ID  Pen/Pencil  ½ Inch to 1 inch binder with 4 section dividers  Essays  Creative Writing  Exams/Quizzes  Daily Work/Notes  Quick Writes (if not getting spiral notebook)

3 Class Procedures and Rules  Be respectful  Come prepared and on time  Be seated when the bell rings  Turn phones on silent and put them away  Raise your hand if you need to address the class

4 Consequences for Missteps!  Verbal Warning  Conference with teacher  Phone call to parents  Referral and conference with grade Principal (Ms. Decker)

5 English Department Policy Regarding Absences and Make-up Work  Don’t exceed 10 ½ absences. Two tardies = One Absences  You have an equal amount of days to turn in an assignment as the days you have missed.  Absences do not give you extra days to turn in work on “long-term” assignments.  Papers one day late receive a 20% reduction in grade  Papers two days late receive a 40% reduction in grade  Papers will not be accepted past two days.  Daily Work will not be accepted late.

6 Summary!  After watching the Jim Gaffigan clip about camping and bacon, write a brief summary of what he discussed.

7 First Writing Evaluation: Paragraphs!  Narrative: Write one paragraph (5-7 sentences) that tells a personal story (experience with friends, event over summer, any event with a beginning, middle, and end.

8 Reflecting  Write one paragraph where you describe a memory. Be sure to tell its significance.

9 Persuading  Write one paragraph about something in which you have a strong opinion. Convince your reader to consider your side (public vs. private schools, cell phones at school, dress code, curfew...anything)
