DynaPeaQ - introduction Contents  Applications for energy storage  Energy storage technologies  Battery solution  Grid interface  Single line diagram  Layout  Highlights  Conclusions © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 2

Grid applications for energy storage Grid connection of renewable generation When connecting large wind farms to the power grid, they will typically be connected to weak grids. Issues such as:  steep power changes  voltage control  grid stability during and after faults and  frequency regulations are areas where the new DynaPeaQ system supports the wind farm. © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 3

Grid applications for energy storage Backup power DynaPeaQ continuously supports the grid with reactive power and in case of generation loss DynaPeaQ will push active power into the grid until new generation is available. © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 4

Grid applications for energy storage Intermittent loads of a railway Accelerating a heavy train can expose the grid to a peak load that traditionally gave rise to extensive capacity build out investments. With DynaPeaQ the required acceleration power is literary taken from the train’s latest deceleration. © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 5

Grid applications for energy storage Emergency and short-time power In a distribution grid a compensator for reactive power would typically provide for power quality improvement. The energy storage adds a whole range of new functions.  In cases where local loading exceeds grid capacity DynaPeaQ provides load support  After black-out restoration, the Energy Storage might be the starting point  For sensitive loads, the Energy Storage can provide overbridging power between outage and backup power © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 6

Grid applications for energy storage Smart Grid Smart Grid applications with DynaPeaQ:  Provides possibilities for connection of renewables  Dynamic energy storage  Integration of electric vehicles  Peak-load shaving  Ancillary services © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 7

Grid applications for energy storage Economical models Deregulation provides new possibilities  Take advantage of electric energy price difference  Buy cheap – Store – Sell at higher price Industry electric supply  Reduce power peaks to cut costs (tariff issue)  Postpone investments in grid strengthening © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 8

Grid applications for energy storage Discharge times DynaPeaQ core range:  5 to 60 minutes  5 to 50 MW © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 9 Flywheels BatteriesPump storage Capacitors Fractions of seconds Minute(s) to hour(s)Hours to days Discharge time Minute

DynaPeaQ Battery solution  The Battery Technology selected for DynaPeaQ is the Li- ion Battery.  The development of Li-ion batteries benefits from the present development of batteries for electrical vehicles.  Calendar life time is acceptable, more than 15 years  Charge / Discharge cycle life time is acceptable. © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 10

DynaPeaQ Hierarchy of the battery solution © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 11 Cell Module Room StringStorage

DynaPeaQ Battery room  Standardized building block  Nominal voltage 3 kV © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 12

DynaPeaQ Series connected battery rooms  Battery rooms combined with service corridors  Either containerized or site buildings © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 13

DynaPeaQ Grid interface  Energy storage connected to the DC side of ABB SVC Light ®  Storage size depending on power level and discharge time  Discharge followed by charge  Focus on “dynamic” properties:  Large number of charge and discharge cycles  High power during relatively long discharge time  ABB has selected a high performance battery as storage © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 14

DynaPeaQ Typical single line diagram Scalability Project depending number of battery strings is included. At a later stage, more battery strings can be added, for higher power and energy. Typically, converters have margins due to reactive power requirements. Flexibility Charging and discharging are fully flexible to the extent that, according to need, high power can be charged/discharged for a short time (power applications), or low(er) power for a long(er) time (energy applications) © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 15

DynaPeaQ SVC Light ABB standard FACTS device  Top class flicker mitigation  Active filtering of harmonics  STATCOM applications  Compact, small footprint © ABB Group October 1, 2016 | Slide 16
