2 Absent Work Policy: It is the student’s responsibility to get the work they missed while they were absent. Students should check the WEEK AT A GLANCE section on my Lakeview website for missed work. If students miss a test or project, they must come in during a tutoring session to make it up. All work not made up, due to absences, will be recorded as a zero. District policy also stipulates that any assignments missed due to an unexcused absence will result in zeros. ReTakes/ReTest Policy: If a student makes below a 70 on a MAJOR grade, they have the opportunity to come in during one of my scheduled tutoring times for help on redoing or retaking the assignment. The higher of the two grades will be assigned, with the maximum possible score of 70. In order to receive re-assessment options, students must turn in major grade assignments by the actual due date. Cheating/Plagiarism: Evidence of cheating or plagiarism will not only result in a zero for the assignment, but will also result in disciplinary action. 8:15-8:40 AM: M, W, F 4:00-4:15: Tuesdays If I’m in my room…I’m available! If I’m in my room…I’m available! No appointments needed! *Please send students with a note/hall pass for AM tutoring. Class Library: Although I do my very best to ensure all of my books are age appropriate, I have not read each of the books on my shelves. Students are checking these out at their own risk. It is expected that students will either bring a book from home or check one out from the school library. However, if a student comes to class without a book for the day, they will be asked to borrow a book from our class library. That means they are also responsible to replace or pay for any lost or damaged books. Tutoring: Composition Book *2 nd composition book may be needed for 2 nd semester Notebook Paper Pens & pencils Highlighter(s) Folder Rules & Expectations: Major Class Rule: Students will act in such a way as not to disrupt their learning or the learning of others in the class. Expectations: Be Prepared, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Positive, & Be on Task. During the first week of school, students will work together as a class to discuss how each of these expectations should look in our classroom.

3 Novel Selections: Below is a list of the possible novels that may be read & taught as a class this school year. If a novel that isn’t listed below is read as a whole class, I will post that update on my class website. Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick Number the Stars by Lois Lowry No More Dead Dogs by Gordon Kormon Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt When Zachary Beaver Came to Town by Kimberly Willis Holt Self-Sustained Reading (SSR): Students will read a minimum of 15 minutes in class every day. Students must bring their own book with them to class every day. As a GRADE, Students will conference with me on what they are reading. Inquiry by Design All ELA classes in LISD use the Inquiry by Design curriculum during the 1 st nine weeks of school. The following short stories will be examined in the 6 th grade curriculum: Father by Gary Soto Being Mean by Gary Soto Gryphon by Charles Baxter Raymon’s Run by Toni Cade Bambara In the Belly of the Clothes Rack by Crystal Ann Williams The purpose of the English Language Arts (ELA) program is to develop students' literacy levels to ensure college and career readiness. Student-focused, the ELA program emphasizes critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. The courses in English Language Arts combine these processes through a heavy emphasis on reading and writing to ensure that students have the best preparation to succeed in everything they will do in their literate lives. -Taken from LISD website Literature Circles Literature Circles are similar to book clubs. Students will have the opportunity to select a book that they would like to read from a selection of titles provided by Mrs. Mitchell. Students will read & meet in small groups of students who also chose to read the same book. Mrs. Mitchell will always include at least one district approved novel in that selection. This year, that book will be Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. If you do not want your student to select from the current list, please instruct them to select Tuck Everlasting, or contact Mrs. Mitchell to let her know.
