3 Getting Your Notes Ready to Turn In Your notes need:  A Title  Grammar Lesson #1: Nouns and Pronouns  Grammar Lesson #2: Verbs  Grammar Lesson #3: Adjectives and Adverbs  3-4 Questions  A 3 sentence summary Staple all notes together, in order. Notes MUST be ready to turn in when you walk in the door….any notes that are not turned in by the time the bell rings will be LATE.

4 TAKE OUT YOUR NOTES….ADD ANYTHING YOU THINK YOU MAY NEED TO REMEMBER, OR THAT YOU MAY NEED TO STUDY FOR THE GRAMMAR QUIZ. Let’s Review

5 Nouns Pronouns and Antecedents A word that names a person, place or thing. Noun types:  Proper, common, compound, collective, abstract. Pronoun  Words that stand for nouns or for words that take the place of nouns. Antecedent  Nouns for which the pronouns stand. Nouns and Pronouns

6 Let’s Practice – Nouns 1. Write a sentence with a collective noun. 2. Write a sentence with a compound noun. 3. Write a sentence with an abstract noun. 4. Write a sentence that uses a common noun and a proper noun. 5. Write a sentence using at least three different types of nouns. ***If any of these nouns types are difficult for you…put a star next to them…that is what you need to study.

7 Let’s Practice – Pronouns/Antecedents Use the following nouns, accompanied by a pronoun that uses the noun as an antecedent to write 2 sentences.  clowns  festival  dancer  New York City  fireworks ***Again, if this is something you did not remember put a star on your notes, so that you remember to review those tonight.

8 Action Verbs Linking Verbs An action verb is a verb that tells what someone or something is performing. Show mental action and visible action. A linking verb is a verb that connects a word at or near the beginning of a sentence with a word at or near the end. Most common linking verb is some form of the verb be. Verbs – Action and Linking

9 Let’s Practice - Verbs Find the verb and label as action or linking: 1. Chinese artists of the Bronze Age made beautiful carvings. 2. The astronauts felt concerned after sensing the explosion. 3. The Apollo 13 mission was successful. 4. Kings had tombs decorated extravagantly for themselves. 5. They hoped for harmony between human beings and nature.

10 Adjectives A word used to describe a noun or pronoun. SO….locate the noun/pronoun…THEN ask yourself what words describe that noun/pronoun. Those are you adjectives.

11 Adverbs A word that describes: Verbs  Ancient people often saw designs in the stars, called constellations. Other Adverbs  She moved very quickly from her forward position to midfield. Adjectives  The Maya were very accomplished astronomers.

12 Let’s Practice….Adjective or Adverb? 1. A glow just barely appears on the northern horizon. 2. Lights move unexpectedly fast across the sky. 3. Ms. Wallace is running for town office. 4. The glow is almost completely gone. 5. My mother raises African violets. 6. I watch very quietly in awe. 7. Each camper had a bottle of insect repellent.
