2 What is a phrase? A group of words that does not contain a subject and verb/predicate. Example: at three in the morning

3 What is a clause? A group of words that contains a subject and predicate There are two kinds: Independent and dependent A clause that makes sense by itself is an independent clause. has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought is also known as a sentence can stand on its own Example: Timmy forgot to do his homework. (Timmy is the subject, forgot is the verb, and a complete thought is expressed.)

A clause that does not make sense by itself is a dependent clause. has a subject and a verb, but it does not express a complete thought is also known as fragment or a subordinate clause cannot stand on its own depends on an independent clause to give it meaning Begin with subordinating conjunctions (subordinators) that indicate the dependent role of the clause in the sentence Example: Whenever Tommy forgets to do his homework, Because Tommy forgets to do his homework, while Tommy always forgets to do his homework …which means that Tommy will forget to do his homework

7 What is a simple sentence? A sentence that consists of one independent clause and no subordinate clauses. Example: Leroy mowed the lawn. Now you write one: ___________________________________________________________ Example with a compound (two-part) verb: Leroy mowed and fertilized the lawn. 8 What is a compound sentence? A sentence that consists of two or more independent clauses and expresses a complete thought. A two part sentence joined by a semicolon (;) or a conjunction: F=for A=and N=nor B=but O=or Y=yet S=so Example: I try to avoid illness, but the flu always finds me.

Same example but in reverse order: Leroy needed to fill the mower’s tank with gas before he could mow the lawn.

10 What is a complex sentence? Continued A complex sentence always has a subordinator such as because, since, after, although, or when (and many others) or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which. Some common dependent markers are: after, although, as, as if, because, before, even if, even though, if, in order to, since, though, unless, until, whatever, when, whenever, whether, and while **Look at the list you were provided in your notes***

11 What is a compound-complex sentence? A sentence that consists of at least two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Example: It isn’t easy to get through the day when my nose runs until it turns red, and I have a fever. Your turn to write some:
