1 Welcome to Geography Thursday, June 30, 2016 Place today’s date at the top of the page, and answer the following question using complete sentences and a minimum of one (3+ sentence) paragraph. What is Geography? 1.Be present at your computer during ALL of class. 2.Have eyes on me and BBC. 3.Ears listening and ready to follow instructions. 4.Keep chat on topic. 5.Use whiteboard tools and programs as directed. This session will be recorded for learning purposes. Learning purposes include: a lesson review for students who are absent, students who want to review for a test, etc. and will be distributed for learning purposes.

2 Announcements Science Fair Outing- Feb 29 th - Locations statewide Out of Office on Thurs and Friday of this week.

3 Block Project Choose any site in your community that is geography or history related. Get your site approved by your teacher (kmail) Visit that site. Write a summary your visit. (3-5 paragraphs) This will be due March 18 th

4 Do you have a Microphone? Microphones are required and will be used during class. If you don’t have one you will lose attendance/participation points.

6 What are we going to learn today?? Content- –Students will be able to define basic terms related to geography, tell how to use a map to locate themselves, and differentiate between physical and human geography

7 What is Geography?  The study of all the aspects of the earth.  Physical Mountains, Lakes, Oceans etc.  Human People, Environmental Impact, Cultures etc.  Mere names of places...are not geography...Geography has higher aims than this: it seeks to classify phenomena [natural and political], to compare, to generalize, to ascend from effects to causes, and, in doing so, to trace out the great laws of nature and to mark their influences upon man....In a word Geography is a Science–a thing not of mere names but of argument and reason, of cause and effect.

8 Physical Geography The study of the physical aspects of the Earth. –Landforms, Oceans –Animals, Ecosystems –Natural Resources

9 Human Geography  Explores the people and cultures of the world and their impacts on it.  Culture  Political systems  Social systems  Economic systems  Characteristics of various peoples Food Religion Movement

10 Where am I?? Spatial Analysis- –locating your space and evaluating it in relation to someplace else –In other words finding your way between 2 places

11 Space… The Final Frontier.  What is out there??  Are we the only ones in the universe??  How can we find our way around??  Earth- the third rock from the sun  Warm enough to survive, but not be scorched.  Heliocentric Theory-  Copernicus  The planets revolve around the sun.  Major shift in thinking for the time, upset many people

12 Earth… The Third Rock from the Sun Rotates on an axis –Takes 24 hours to complete one rotation –Constant 23 ½ degree angle. Orbits the sun –Takes 365¼ days to make one revolution Leap Year
