ENERGY Types of Energy Disadvantages and Advantages

Types of Energy CEMENTS CChemical EElectrical MMechanical EElectromagnetic NNuclear TThermal SSound

Chemical Energy produced whenever one kind of matter is changed into another. For Example: -the foods you eat -a match to light a candle

Electrical Moving electrical charges produces energy For Example: -power lines and batteries to run things -everything that uses electricity

Mechanical Energy associated with motion For Example: -picking up a pencil -a car moving

Electromagnetic The light that you see For Example: -visible light, ultraviolet light -microwaves, infrared radiation

Nuclear Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom and released during a nuclear reaction For Example: -fission: nucleus splits -fusion: nucleus joins

Thermal (Heat) Occurs whenever the temperature of something changes For Example: -boiling water -melting ice cream

Sound Energy made by vibrations For Example: -knocking on a door -singing

Non Renewable and Renewable sources SOL 6.2c/d- We will identify and describe Non-Renewable and Renewable sources

Renewable Resources “A 'renewable resource' is an organic natural resource which can replenish to overcome usage and consumption, either through biological reproduction or other naturally reoccurring processes. Renewable resources are a part of Earth's natural environment and the largest components of its ecosphere.” From Google.com

Renewable Resources Solar energy Wind energy Hydroelectric power Geothermal energy Biomass

Solar Energy Energy from the sun Advantages: Does not cause pollution Will not run out Cheap Disadvantages: Only available when sun is shining Energy from the sun is very spread out

Wind Energy Energy from the wind Advantages: Wind energy is free Does not cause pollution Disadvantages: Expensive to make: wind isn’t everywhere Harms birds Takes a lot of space for windmills Wind Turbines

Hydroelectric power Energy produced from flowing water Advantages: Inexpensive Does not cause pollution Disadvantages: Most suitable for rivers already dammed up Human-made dams can have a negative effect on environment Can kill fish and animals Floods large areas

Geothermal Heat energy in the Earth’s interior from water or steam that has been heated by magma Advantages: -Unlimited -Cheap Disadvantages: -expensive to drill deep wells -not everywhere

Biomass Fuels made from things that were once alive like leaves, food, trees. Advantages: Endless supply Uses things that were once alive Disadvantages: Can be expensive Produces methane gas Takes time

NONRenewable Resources Non-renewable energy comes from sources that will run out or will not be replenished in our lifetimes—or even in many, many lifetimes. Most non- renewable energy sources are fossil fuels: coal, petroleum, and natural gas. Carbon is the main element in fossil fuels. From National Geographic.com

NONRenewable Resources Fossil Fuel  Coal  Natural Gas  Oil (petroleum) - Petrochemicals

Fossil Fuels Energy rich substances formed from the remains of once-living organisms. Three types of fossil fuels are: Coal Oil Natural Gas

Coal A solid fossil fuel formed from plant remains Advantages: -Easy to transport -Provides a lot of energy Disadvantages: -pollution, erosion -dangerous job, diseases

Oil (petroleum) A thick, black liquid fossil fuel Advantages: -can be used to make many things -Easy to transport Disadvantages: -difficult to find -causes pollution

Petrochemicals  Compounds made from oil.  A byproduct of Petroleum (oil)

Natural Gas A fossil fuel that is made up of methane and other gases. Advantages: -Easy to transport - Large amounts of energy Disadvantages: -highly flammable -causes pollution
