2 What is Word Processing? Using a computer to create, edit, and print documents. Of all computer applications, word processing is the most common. To perform word processing, you need a computer, a special program called a word processor, and a printer. A word processor enables you to create a document, store it electronically on a disk, display it on a screen, modify it by entering commands and characters from the keyboard, and print it on a printer.

3 Saving Click File, Save Saves file with current name Ctrl S Click disk image on toolbar Click File, Save As change the name or location of a document keep the original document intact

4 Alignment Left-margins are smooth on the left and jagged on the right. (default) Ctrl L or align left button Center-text is centered horizontally on the page (used for titles, etc.) Ctrl E or align center button Right-margins are smooth on the right and jagged on the left. Ctrl R or align right button Justified-margins are smooth on both the left and the right. Used most often in newspapers and newsletters. Ctrl J or the justify button

6 Cut, Copy, and Paste Cut- Removes selected text or object, it is then temporarily stored on the clipboard. Ctrl X Cut icon Copy- Original text or object stays intact, a copy is then temporarily stored on the clipboard. Ctrl C Copy icon Highlight the text or select the object you want to copy, hold down the Ctrl key and drag it off the original. Paste- Inserts text or objects that have been cut or copied. You can paste an unlimited number of times. Ctrl V Paste icon

7 Editing Your Document Spell Check & Grammar Check Red line – suggested spelling error Green line – suggested grammatical error Right click to fix or ignore Run the entire document through spell check and grammar check by going to the review tab and clicking the spell check icon Thesaurus- Looks up synonyms and antonyms of a selected word Go to the Review tab and select thesaurus Shift F7 Find and Replace- Use this tool to find or replace specific text

8 Formatting Your Text Bold, Italic, Underline- Change the appearance of text Icons on ribbon under the Home tab Ctrl B, Ctrl I, Ctrl U Format Painter- duplicates formatting of selected text Text Effects-change the appearance text Superscript and subscript Strikethrough Engrave Small caps Sparkle text Much more!!!

10 Other Elements ClipArt- Drawing used to emphasize text Additional images are available on MS’s website Images can be edited WordArt- Text that the computer views as a graphic WordArt is not spell checked WordArt can be formatted (fills, shapes, shadow, etc.) AutoShapes- Many different shapes available (ovals, stars, etc.) Can be formatted the same way as WordArt
