Goal(s): Be able to explain stress and differences and similarities among different distress and eustress. Be able to explain the process of appraising a situation and apply it to your own life. 1. 4 * Our school is planning on dropping sports and extracurricular activities next year so they can save money!

5 * Stress- a person’s reaction to his or her inability to cope with a certain tense event or situation * Reasons vary * Ex. public speaking * Focus and energy * Cannot live life without it * Stressor- a stress-producing event or situation major: loss of a parent minor: parking your car

6 * Negative stress * Ex. anxiety

7 * Pleasant, desirable stress * Motivates to get things accomplished

8 Primary appraisal- immediate evaluation of a situation - Is the situation something we can handle? Secondary appraisal- decision on how to deal with a potentially stressful situation Use a coping strategy Level of stress= how we appraise a situation Getting broken up with…

9 - 3 different ways of appraising a situation: - positive- I can do this! (not stressed out) - negative- No, I cannot handle this! - irrelevant- it doesn’t matter

14 * Reducing Stress/Conflict Situations * Conflict Situations Psych II Groups Activity HW/ Coming up: Read Chapter 15 by Friday! Expect a quiz! Goal(s): Be able to explain how to reduce stress. Be able to explain and differentiate among the four different kinds of conflict situations. 1. Work on the bell work.

16 * Conflict situation: stress caused by choosing something among options in your life

17 * In your notes, under what you just wrote down, as you read pages 414- 416, define/explain the four types of conflict situations: approach- approach, avoidance-avoidance, approach-avoidance, and double approach-avoidance. * Hint: Look at Figure 15.2 on page 415

19 * You will create a skit! * Start working on it right away after I say go. * Write all your names on the sheet! * Be sure you are ready to present in 10 minutes. * You can write notes for each other for the skits on half sheets of paper. * Everyone needs to go up there and be a part of the skit, but NOT everyone has to have a speaking role! * Wait to pass up your answers.

21 * Red- Checker… The Checker Checks to make sure all group members understand the concepts and the group’s conclusions.… * Blue- Recorder… The Recorder takes notes summarizing team discussions and decisions, and keeps all necessary records. * Silver- Timekeeper… The Timekeeper keeps track of the time and makes sure that the group finishes their task on time. * Green- Main Facilitator… The Main Facilitator leads the discussion, making sure that everyone within the group is participating. * Yellow(s) - Gatekeeper… The Gatekeeper makes sure that everyone is on task. * Someone not here- you all take over his/her job

Exceptional Adjustment Project- due next Friday- that’s when everyone will be presenting! Goal(s): Be able to explain the state of positive psychology. 1. Work on the bell work.

32 1. Use the BLUE side. 2. Only your name needed on it! 3. Follow instructions given on the test. 4. No cheating or helping to cheat! No phones out. Any of these= 0. 5. Place in two piles on top of the counter. Once done: Stay quiet until everyone is done. You can listen to music AFTER you’re done with the test.

33 * If you haven’t taken the test from Thursday, step outside please. * As in, if you didn’t get a scantron.
