2 A quick look at the Civil War Created by Ms. Dennis’ fifth grade class 08/09

3 by: Destiny In 1819, Missouri wanted to re-join the US as a slave state. Adding Missouri would have upset the difference between free states and slave states. Henry Clay came up with the compromise. He said that Missouri could join as a slave state and Maine could join as a free state. congress debated the issue and disagreed. That’s what started the Civil War.

4 The Compromise Of 1850 By:Crews The Compromise of 1850 was arising from the Mexican-American War it happened 1846-1848. It happened because of The Fugitive Slave Act. There are many reasons why the Compromise happened one is that California-A territory that had big with the gold rush of 1849.

5 FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT The fugitive slave act is part of the compromise of 1850. A fugitive is a person that runs away from slavery. this act forced all Americans to turn in escaped from slavery. Many northerners did not like this law. Chance Clendenning

6 In 1854,the Kansas Nebraska Act was passed. This Act let people living in Kansas and Nebraska to deiced if they wanted slavery. People for and against slavery moved to Kansas. After a vote, the people of Kansas deiced not to allow slavery. Sam

7 Cheyne Abraham Lincoln was elected president during the civil war. The northern side won and the southern side lost. The turning point was the battle of Gettysburg. The worst battle was the battle of fort Sumter. Lincoln signed the Gettysburg address four months after the Civil war.

18 Tyler GENERAL LEE WAVED THE WHITE FLAG. On April 9 1865 General Lee surrendered. They surrendered to General Grant in the Virginia village of Appomattox court house. General Lee surrendered because they were starving and out numbered.

20 Crystel Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln was assassinated in April15,1865. He was buried in Springfield Illinois. The Republican Party nominated Lincoln to be president in1860. On January 1 st 1863 Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation and free the slaves in the south.

21 Reconstuction Lincoln wanted to bring the nation back together, he didn’t want to punish the people of the South. Congress put the Southern states under military rule. Southern states had to write new constitutions that gave African American men the right to vote.
