5 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging SOCIOGENIC MODELS Lead to other key theories that will be covered during the successful aging portion of the course. What’s the main point behind sociogenic theories? Transitions shaped by society are the key, not internal psychological processes.

6 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging CURRENT THEORIES Middle ground approach. Integrate effects of biological, psychological, and sociohistorical influences on adult development. 3 types of models: 1) Life Course theory Model 2) Goal-Oriented Models 3) Conscious Development Models

7 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging LIFE COURSE THEORIES: ELDER Influence of cohort and history on life course. Development is a series of transitions that are influenced by sociohistory and current social context. Ex. The great depression of the 1920’s and 30’s.

9 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging GOAL-ORIENTED MODELS: BRANDTSTADTER SELF-DEVELOPMENT MODEL Emphasis on goals. Self-directed development in pursuit of goals. Goals Early adulthood: achieve ideal self Later Life: maintenance/successful aging

10 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging CONSCIOUS DEVELOPMENT: LANGER Adult Development is something individuals do & revolves around increasing mindfulness. But….what is Mindfulness and Mindlessness?

11 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging LIBERATIVE MODEL LEVENSON & CRUMPLER Adult development occurs as a result of increasing freedom from social & biological conditioning. Occurs through self-observation.

12 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging PIAGET Identified developmental processes that are involved in how we interpret and react to new experiences. Assimilation Accommodation Equilibrium

13 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging WHITBOURNE IDENTITY PROCESS THEORY Identity can be used to explain assimilation & accommodation when interacting. We use our own personal identity which is defined by 4 main aspects when approaching experiences.

14 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging IDENTITY PROCESS THEORY: IDENTITY ASSIMILATION A complex process of adaptation to the changes involved in aging. Issue: Human bias - favorable light. Identity Assimilation: To recognize unacceptable aspects of the self is painful = negative affect. Maintain self-consistency.

15 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging IDENTITY PROCESS THEORY: IDENTITY ACCOMODATION Unstable, incoherent identity. Change in the face of experience. Goal: balance between accommodation and assimilation.

16 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging BRINGING IT CLOSER TO HOME: REAL LIFE EXAMPLE OF IPT Changes in physical appearance = threat to older individuals identity. There can be 3 response types: 1. Assimilation 2. Accommodation 3. Balanced

17 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging IN CLASS ACTIVITY Can you give an example of identity assimilation and identity accommodation either from your own life, or from movies/TV or literature?

18 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging IDENTITY PROCESS THEORY: THE MULTIPLE THRESHOLD MODEL Physical/cognitive changes effect identity. Stepwise stages of feeling “old”. Importance differs from person to person.

19 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging IDENTITY PROCESS THEORY: THE NOTION OF RECIPROCITY Identity influences what we do to improve our chances of successful aging. Use it or lose it approach.
