2 SSWH17 I will be able to identify the major political and economic factors that shaped world societies between World War I and World War II.

3 Element C. Describe the rise of Fascism in Europe and Asia by comparing the policies of Benito Mussolini in Italy, Adolf Hitler in Germany, and Hirohito in Japan.

4 Essential Questions. What is fascism? What is Nazism? What is totalitarianism? How would you explain the rise of Mussolini in Italy as a fascist ruler? How would you explain the rise of the Hitler in Germany as a fascist ruler?

5 Postwar Issues----- Copied yesterday. Postwar Europe faced grave problems: Returning veterans needed jobs. War-ravaged lands needed to be rebuilt. Many nations owed huge debts because they had borrowed heavily to pay for the war. Economic problems fed social unrest and made radical ideas more popular. The peace settlements dissatisfied many Europeans, especially in Germany and Eastern Europe. Europe lacked strong leaders just when they were most needed. 1

7 Nazism: political system based on strong nationalism which believed in racial superiority and state control of industry 1. German version of Fascism 2. supported by people in middle and lower class 3. opposed Communism 4. The Nazi party chose the swastika as its symbol.

8 Mein Kampf (My Struggle) Written during the nine months Hitler served in prison. The book set forth his beliefs and goals for Germany. He asserted Germans were a “master race.” He declared Germany’s need for “lebensraum” or “living space.

9 Hitler Becomes Chancellor chosen as Nazi Party leader (given the title “der Fuhrer The Nazis were the largest political party in Germany by 1932. In late 1933 Hitler was elected Chancellor through legal means and was able to pass significant legislation increasing Hitler’s power.

10 Hitler’s Political Road to Power The Reichstag Fire Decree abolished civil rights protections. Destroyed socialist and communist Disbanded other political parties The Gestapo was established as the Nazi’s secret police. Strikes were made illegal. Millions of people were put to work building up the military.

11 Goals of the Third Reich Hitler dreamed of creating a purely Aryan state that would dominate the world.Aryan To achieve his goal, Hitler used economic policies, mass demonstrations, organizations, and terror. Hitler created public works projects to help with the high unemployment rates and ended the Depression.
