3 United States vs. Soviet Union United States  Capitalism – citizens control economy  Democracy – voting by the people  Didn’t like how Stalin had been allied with Hitler Soviet Union  Communism – state controlled all property and economic activity  Totalitarian government (no opposing political parties)  Stalin resented US delay in helping them against Hitler  Stalin didn’t like that US kept atomic bomb a secret

5 President Truman  Many Americans doubted his leadership  Congress didn’t let him make many decisions  Didn’t even know about the atomic bomb until the Interim Committee
