2 Main Verbs: Action vs. Linking  Action: shows mental or physical action  Action verb may possibly lead to  A direct object  An indirect object  Adverbs  Linking: indicates a relationship between subject and predicate part/word in a sentence Linking verb leads to one of these predicate words:  Predicate noun (gives a name or role for a person  Predicate pronoun (identifies)  Predicate adjectives (describes)

3 Action  Example:  Mr. Smola sold a bike.  Find verb: sold  Find subject: who or what sold?  Mr. Smola  Find direct object: verb + what?  Sold what? = bike Direct object (object or person acted upon)

6 Linking  Examples  Stacy is friend. friend—noun  Stacy is she. she—pronoun  Stacy is tall. tall—adjective  Stacy seems afraid. afraid—adj.  Stacy became a leader. leader-n.  Stacy will be she. she--pronoun Word that comes after the linking verb is called a predicate word or subject complement Three types of predicate words/subject complements: Predicate noun Predicate pronoun Predicate adjective
