3 Announcements “SSR”- Silent Sustained Reading will occur EVERY Tuesday and Thursday during your 4 th period class. You are required to have a NOVEL, not picture book. Bring a book to read; It is NOT optional. You are required to turn in at least 1 “Reading Log” sheet every week for a daily grade. It must be written in complete sentences. Friday (1/8/16) – Unit 3 Test

4 Objectives SWBAT explain five types of expository writing. SWBAT define and explain uses of expository writing.

5 Homework Complete “Sir Isaac Newton and Lebron James” article; Due Friday (1/8/2016). You must: – Read the article. – Write a summary sentence every 3 paragraphs. – Answer questions with textual evidence. – Open ended questions need to be answered in complete sentences.

6 Expository Writing Notes Expository writing is a type of writing where the purpose is to inform, describe, or explain.

7 Types of Expository Writing Description-The author describes a topic. Sequence-The author uses numerical or chronological order to list items or events. Compare/contrast-The author compares and contrasts two or more similar events, topics, or objects. Cause/effect-The author delineates one or more causes and then describes the ensuing effects. Problem/solution-The author poses a problem or question and then gives the answer.

9 Why is Expository Writing Important? Expository writing allows you to identify and analyze text structures in texts and this helps readers comprehend and retain information longer.

10 Expository Essays Similar to personal narrative essays, expository essays have the following: 1 Introduction (attention grabber and a strong thesis statement) 2-3 Body Paragraphs (with a transition word at the beginning of each paragraph) 1 Conclusion (restate thesis, summarize main points, leave the reader with something to consider)

11 Expository Essay Checklist! Title Indentation Clear Thesis Statement/Clear Opinion Attention Grabber Figurative Language Transitions/Transitional Phrases

12 Expository Essay Model With a partner, read a model of an expository essay. Make four specific changes to improve the writing of the expository essay.

13 Exit Ticket- Write the Introduction Only! Prompt: Your parents have just won the lottery and want to take you on a dream vacation! Write an essay describing where you would like to go and why.
