3 Expository writing is defined as presenting reasons, explanations, or steps in a process. Since they are factual, they are written without emotion and usually written in the third person. Where will you find Expository Writing? What is Expository Writing? Editorials Explanations Editorials Reports News Articles Research Essay Instructions Recipe

4 The Function The function of the expository essay is to explain, or to demonstrating your own knowledge, or to enhance your reader’s understanding of a topic. Prompts for expository writing use words such as: explain, clarify, inform, describe.

5 Brainstorm What are you going to explain how to do? Why did you choose this topic? Who will be reading your writing? Use formal language and 3rd Person Point of View (NO “I” or “you”) TonePurposeAudience

6 Expository Structure At Glance The Introduction The Body The Conclusion The introduction should state the theme of the paper. The body provides support, details, and examples. The conclusion “wraps up” thoughts and ideas about the theme.

7 Ways of Writing an Introduction The purpose of the introduction is to get the Readers’ attention, to provide background introduction of the subject and to clearly state the topic. You can use one of the following techniques to begin: By stating a fact 1 By classification 2 By asking rhetorical question 3

8 Ways of Writing the Body Organize your information using one of the models. Use transitions between body paragraphs. Effective expository body should contain a main idea, supporting details, and a conclusion. 1.Fact or Opinion 2.Cause and Effect 3.Compare and Contrast 4.Reasons or benefits 5.Advantageous and disadvantageous 6.Classification

9 How to Brainstorm the Body The table technique is an excellent way to review or summarize information learned about a specific process. Volcanoes What are they? How do they operate? Where are they? Volcanoes are a powerful, natural force.

10 Ways of Writing a Conclusion The conclusion may begin with a closing transition. It summarizes your main supporting points. Make your personal statement to bring your essay to a close. You can use one of the following techniques to close your essay. By restating the reasons 1 By giving advice 2 By asking for action 3

11 It’s time to write!!! Think about how new computers can benefit your school. Your principal has decided that students in your school can have several new computers in your classroom. Write an essay for the school newspaper about how the new computers will be used to benefit your learning.
