2 Endings Matter  The –ed verb ending must be pronounced in English because it tells the listener when something happens  I walk into the room.  Simple Present  I walked into the room.  Simple Past

3 The –ed verb ending is pronounced 3 different ways: 1. [t]  walked [wakt] 2. [d]  loved [l ʌ vd] 3. [id]  visited [vizitid]

4 Listen to the following verbs and place them in the [t], [d], or [id] column on your worksheet according to what you hear.

5 Now let’s come up with some rules. 1. When the verb ends in a vowel sound or voiced consonant sound (B, G, L, M, N, R, V, W, Y, Z), the –ed ending is pronounced _________

11 Unvoiced vs. Voiced Sounds Put your fingers on your vocal cords (throat) and try to say the following sounds:  zzzz  vvvv  ssss  ffffff What did you feel?

12  When we make voiced sounds [z], [v], our vocal cords vibrate.  Voiced sounds are followed by the [d] pronunciation of the – ed verb ending  When we make voiceless sounds [s], [f], our vocal cords do not vibrate.  Voiceless sounds are followed by the [t] pronunciation of the – ed verb ending

13 Partner Activities  Pronunciation Puzzle – 5 minutes  Listen to your partner read sentences and identify if the verb is in the simple present or simple past tense.  Writing Sentences – 10 minutes  Write 5 sentences using the –ed verb ending and practice reading the sentences out loud.  Summarize a News Item – 10 minutes  Summarize a news item in 3 sentences.

14 Visit the CRL and listen to a news program in English. Do you hear the –ed ending? Write down any words that you hear that end in –ed.
