2. After Gettysburg After the Battle of Gettysburg the Confederate forces were in a state of disaster. With 25,000 casualties suffered, the Southern army could never recover from its defeat.

3. Union emboldened With their major success at Gettysburg, The Union army prepares to launch a new invasion into the heartland of the south.

4. Total War Military tactic in which the casualties are not just soldiers on a battlefield. Cities, homes, farms, livestock (animals), factories, churches, schools and even civilians are destroyed by the other sides army.

6. General Sherman An experienced and brave officer. Personal friend to General Grant. Many people thought he was crazy, turned out to be one of the greatest Union generals. Beloved by his men who called him “Uncle Billy”. Famous words “I will make Georgia (Southern State) Howl”!!!

7. Sherman’s Army With only about 60,000 men, surrounded by millions of enemy, Sherman's troops boldly march into the South, without any contact with the north. Many of them were armed with carbines, better than the rifle or musket of the enemy. Some of his soldiers are called bummers, his army had to live off the land, looting wherever they went.

9. Burning of Atlanta Sherman captures the major trade and supply housing center of Atlanta Georgia on Sept 2 nd, 1864. After looting the City, several fires start, burning most of the City down. General Sherman, after sending back tons of captured supplies to the Union, begins his march for the Capitol of Savannah, Georgia.

16. Sherman before Savannah Sherman continues his destruction of the South. Because of the Emancipation Proclamation, slaves are freed and join his army.

17. Sherman Takes Savannah On December 22 nd Sherman captures Savannah, sending a message to Abraham Lincoln “I beg to present you, as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah, with 150 heavy guns and plenty of ammunition, and also about 25,000 bales of cotton.”
