In this presentation I’m going to talk about three extreme environments that are completely different. These environments are extreme, and we are not very adapted to that environments The North Pole The amazon (rainforest) The Sahelian Acacia savanna

Location: It's located at 90° North latitude and all lines of longitude converge at the pole. The earth's axis connects the north and south poles, as its the line around which the earth rotates. The North Pole is about 450 miles (725 km) north of Greenland in the middle of the Arctic Ocean - the sea there has a depth of 13,410 feet (4087 meters). Most of the time, sea ice covers the North Pole but recently, water has been sighted at the exact location of the pole. Climate The North Pole is substantially warmer than the South Pole because it lies at sea level in the middle of an ocean (which acts as a reservoir of heat), rather than at altitude in a continental land mass. Winter (January) temperatures at the North Pole can range from about − 43 °C to − 26 °C,). So as it’s a very difficult climate to survive in, not too many living things will survive there, only those adapted to the north pole.

Fauna: The animals that you can find in the north pole are animals adapted to that climate and flora… The animals that you can find in the north pole are: The artic fox The polar bear The ringed seal Artic terns Artic hares Snow owl Animals that live in water: whale

Flora: The flora that you can find in the north pole are none, because plants are not adapted to such low temperatures, and they need soil, and as most of it is all ice, they can’t survive, that’s why the flora that you can find is only in the sea. People No-one lives in the north pole, only scientists, or groups have been in the north pole for studying it. Most of the people come from the UK and the USA

Location: The amazon rainforest is found in South America in the upper part of Brazil, in the southern hemisphere, very close in the equator. Climate The amazon rainforest has a tropical climate; it is hot and humid with an average temperature of 26 degrees Celsius all through the year. This is because it is very close to the equator, it doesn’t change very much the climate. Flora: The Amazon rainforest has a huge live collection of flora species. Botanical experts say that in 2.5 acres of the forest you can find 700 different species of trees and twice that number of plants. One of the most awesome things you will notice is that the forest has a high density of trees and they are very tall. Many trees reach 130 meters high

Fauna: In the amazon you can find lots of different animals, some of them are: The jaguar The vampire bat The tapir The anaconda The leafcutter ant

People: People live in the amazon rainforest, lots of tribes and lots of different ethnic groups. These people are adapted to that climate because they have been living there for such a long time that now they have adapted. They are adapted to eating tropical food, living in a tropical climate, building their own houses …

Location: The Sahelian Acacia savanna, it’s found in the northern hemisphere, in the continent of Africa and it passes through lots of countries from Africa in the north. Climate: The Sahelian climate is a tropical semi-arid climate with the dry season mainly (but not exclusively) during the "cold" season (the coldest six months of the year): It is tropical because the mean monthly temperature of the "coldest" month is equal to or greater than 18°C. It is semi-arid because of low annual precipitation, below about 600 mm in a tropical climate (and above about 100–150 mm), characterized by irregular and unpredictable short rainy seasons through the years. The dry season generally lasts from about 8 to 11 months a year. Though erratic, the rainy season in a Sahelian climate zone usually occurs during the warm season but not during the very hottest months.

Flora: The savanna is mostly covered by grass and bushes. But you can also find trees like the baobab, the acacia tree, The Candelabra Tree.

Fauna: In the Sahelian Acacia savanna you can find lots of different animals, but most of them are really dangerous and wild. Some of them are these ones: The Lion The giraffe The Snake The escorpion The ñu The rhino The elephant The jaguar and more…

People: Yes people do live in the Sahelian Acacia savanna. They live there because Africa is growing, and they have to find somewhere to live, obviously most of them are poor, because they can’t pay for a house. These poor people have to walk lots of kilometers to find some food and some water to survive, and yet they look as though they were living in the U.S.A.

If we compare each enviroment between them, we will get complete different results. For example: The north pole is extreme because it has very low temperatures, we cannot find any plants or food to feed ourselves, and it is very difficult to kill an animal for feeding yourself, without being hurt. However, in the Sahelian Acacia savanna, there is a very hot climate for surviving, so you need lots of water, something that there isn’t in that savanna, and you have to walk kilometers if you are lucky to find some. Also it’s hard to survive, because there isn’t lots of animals, there are some, but very little, and some of them are even poisonous. However, in the amazon rainforest, there is a perfect climate, and it doesn’t change because it is very near to the equator, so you don’t have to worry there about the climate. The bad thing, is that sometimes there is a lot of precipitation, so you have to be well protected. Another bad thing, is that there are very dangerous and poisonous animals. It is easier than the other places, because you can kill some to eat without any problems, and you also have lots of plants.

In conclusion I think that these three extreme environments are called like that because they are difficult for someone to adapt to. I think that the most extreme ones are the Shahelian Acacia savanna and the North pole. I think this because they have very extreme temperatures; therefore, it is very difficult to survive. Also in the case of those environments is very difficult to be able to find water and food... But in the rainforest, you have the perfect temperature for a human to survive. The bad thing is that it is called extreme because of the animals that live there, they are very dangerous, and some of them very poisonous.
