2. Welcome to Our Class! Welcome to Grade 9 Applied English! This course: Will introduce you to high school English, through the study of Reading, Writing, Oral and Media Strands

3. Welcome to Room 1754! We make sure that this is a positive working environment, a place where you can feel comfortable and confident while you are learning.

4. A few key things to keep in mind for success:

5. Attendance Be present and be on time If absent, see me for any work that you missed or any handouts. You take the initiative. Miss a test or an assignment? Complete or submit it immediately upon your return.

6. Due Dates All course assignments, whether written or presented in class, be completed on time. Keep track of when assignments are due. Experiencing difficulties? See me as soon as possible.

7. Late Assignments Boooo!  I will meet with you to discuss the reason why the deadline was not met. As a result of this meeting: an extension or an alternative assessment may be given and your parent/guardian may be contacted to discuss next steps.  You may be referred to PASS or to Student Success to complete the assignment. Your teacher and or Vice Principal will determine if this completion will take place during lunch or during class time.  Your completed work will be evaluated. Students who do not submit work in a timely manner shall have this reflected in the Learning Skills and Work Habits section on the Provincial Report Card.

8. Late Assignments If work is still not submitted on the established date or if you do not follow through with PASS/Student Success you will be referred to your Vice Principal and next steps may include but are not limited to: student referral to in-school intervention support (School Success Team, Special Education LAC, Guidance etc.); a negotiated extension that meets teacher mark reporting deadlines; and/or an alternative opportunity for the student to demonstrate the same critical elements, or an “incomplete” (I) will be entered for this evaluation. The use of “I” indicates that work has not been submitted. When determining a final grade the teacher’s use of professional judgement based on interventions and data collected determine whether or not the student has demonstrated the required critical elements at another point in the course

9. Plagiarism To plagiarize : “to give out as one’s own, the writing, inventions, or ideas of another.” Cheating Dishonest with your teacher, your peers, your “source” and yourself. When in doubt, source it out!

10. Plagiarism Consequences: If your teacher suspects that you have plagiarised (cheated), the Vice Principal and I get involved – icky poo. Parents You lose lunch hours, etc

11. Classroom Maintenance Respect the space Garbage and graffiti will not be tolerated Please make use of the blue bins (cans, plastic bottles etc.) and grey bins (paper). Water = good

12. Electronic Devices Smartphone use is permitted in this classroom when, and only when, the teacher indicates. No texting, gaming. Mid-five, last five

13. Electronic Devices Personal electronic devices (laptops, netbooks, tablets) are permitted in class as long as they are being used appropriately. The use of MP3 players are acceptable in class during individual study and independent work.

14. Textbooks and Classroom Materials Do not rely on me to provide you with extra pens, paper, handouts, textbooks etc. Anything you borrow MUST be returned. This includes: books, pens, pencil crayons, markers, etc.

15. Leaving the Classroom Write your name on the book at the front of the room. Bathroom breaks should be kept to a four minute maximum.

16. Class Discussions Raise your hand and I will call on you. DO NOT YELL OUT! NO HUNTING! Classroom discussion and presentations are not an opportunity to take someone else down. Constructive dialogue is always welcome; hunting is not permitted.

17. Extra Help I am happy to provide extra help to any student who requests it. However, please remember that I am not a mind reader and, therefore, you must speak up and advocate for yourself. I am available before school, most lunch hours and after school. Please see me to confirm a time.
